Here is the new front propshaft that I had made for my Typhoon:

I asked for a better price if we do a GP, and he is to get back to me Monday with the new figures. So for now, it looks like $289 + shipping gets you this one. It uses Spicer u-joints and is balanced and painted black. Lead time is 1 day. If he gets me a better price tomorrow, I'll post it here. I told him I wanted pricing for 5 shafts.

Since I sold my original propshaft, I cannot take a side-by-side picture. It does, however, look substantially stronger than stock. I would also need one volunteer to measure the overall length from flange to flange (outside) for the correct length - mine is longer than stock.

LMK your thoughts...

Looks good, i just wonder its strength compared to a Gilbert...probably no way of really knowing without experience from a few guys with them. Better priced for sure.

that is why I posted the pic of the diameter...interesting for someone to measure their stocker too.

The shop tells me that this front prop they have used in 1-ton 4WD trucks for mudding/rockcrawling, and as long as nothing strikes it, they hold up very well. They offer a stronger prop shaft, but it does not have the double-cardin joint. While it is much stronger, it also will almost definitely vibrate more. It would actually be a bit cheaper for them to make that driveshaft than this one, but let's think of this logically a minute.

Lets say we have a Sy/Ty that is putting out 1000HP to the wheels (!). With the 65%/35% split we have, that would be 350HP through this shaft. Looking at it, I see NO problems at all. Most of us are in the 400-600 at the wheels (just humor me...). That would mean the front propshaft would see 210HP through it. The major point is that we are going away from the CV joint that is used in the stock propshaft, and going to a double U-joint/Cardin joint. If I can get them to drop the price a little, I think it's a good deal. Although I am not on the same level as Ed or Hoovers or some others here, I plan on hitting the front with somewhere around 260HP worth of power.

This is not knocking the Gilbert shaft...I have yet to see one in person. I am just offering a less expensive alternative. To some people, $100 is $100. It could be used somewhere else in the build/upgrades (3BAR MAP, AFPR, new IC pump, new FP, maybe new plug wires...) These prop shafts are brand new, with new u-joints, come with zircs for lubrication, can have the u-joints replaced if necessary.

The Gilbert is a proven design but, a hundred beans is a hundred beans. However I have NEVER heard a complaint from someone upon receivng a Gilbert that they felt that paid too much for it...

Hey Mike...I assume the second pic is showing the overall length, right? 26.125"? Great! The pic I shot of the 1.8905" is the skinny-end - where the grease zirks are (in my first pic, the far right-hand side looks like it is stepped-down...that where I took the first measurements, noted by where the caliper is), and where the shaft moves in and out of itself. The fat-end, where you have the double u-joint, is more like 2.00", like the Gilbert unit. Here are a few pics of the thickness there, and the size of the double cardin joint

They look very similar, if you ask me! I also think that someone getting this propshaft will also find no complaints for their money's worth! The major point of contention that I see wrong with our stock propshaft is the cv-style joint. I just cant see this damn thing breaking anytime soon......

Yes, that pic of the flange is the overall length from flange edge to flange edge. The length is 26.25 inches ;)... So the OD is the same, previous post edited.

I just got off the phone with the builders...they say that the best they can do for 5+ is $275/each. Then all we have to add is shipping. So, if this sounds good to you out there, let me know...

This looks just like the shaft thats been in my truck since I got it.

since the shaft is the same diameter most likly yes; i think most guys just bend the selector out of the way. you dont even have to bend it that much. worked for mine.

yes on both counts...I will let you know on the gear selector...I am also assuming that the added girth may need a bit of 'massaging'.

After talking with the builder, I am pretty sure that I have landed this $275/each for the shafts. I am working on trying to have him cover the sales tax on this too...

I already have 1 ordered for someone, and have another pending payment next week.

I'm sure people will be ecstatic when they get their new shaft.

OK, call me dumb, but I'm gonna ask what might be a dumb question. So here goes... just what was GM's wisdom in using a CV-joint for the diff end of the shaft instead of a "conventional" cross joint in the first place?
OK, make that two dumb Qs. Why two back-to-back joints on the TC end?

You can go ahead and do that...look at my pics...same thing I did with the McCoy supershaft. I know Stripper Motorsports has been trying to get a similar piece made. Looking through some of the threads, I see people have been asking for a $250-300 well-built front prop-shaft, and here it is. This is for all to benefit from. I can get pricing for a brand new aluminum rear driveshaft if you want that. I can price brand new steel units. I can price you aluminum versions of the heavy-duty front propshaft. Don't think that $275/ea is raking in big $$ profits...it just isn't there. Barely enough for me to cover gas there and back (40 miles round trip). This is available for all of those out there who do not have access to a reputable driveline shop that can build something strong enough for our trucks. It just so happens that the location I am getting these made at is top-notch. They are used HEAVILY by the sand-draggers up here. Sand is pretty tough on driveline parts, just like mud is. So if you need a quality front propshaft replacement, this is a great piece at a great price. I will post pics tomorrow PM of mine installed so you can see. I wouldn't hesitate putting this same shaft in a 1000HP Sy/Ty at all - I am that confident in it.
