New Motor???

Well after many snow storms out here I came across a nice day to get the sy out. And with only 1500 miles on a completly new motor I had a failure. Coming home on the highway tonight I got on the sy a little to make a pass and it just quit. All I seen was the lights come on in the dash, no knocks or bangs. At first I thought I lost the fuel pump but after I got stopped and could hear the motor turn over, it had the skip in compressision. Got her home and pulled the distributer cap and found that the rotor is not turning. So I dont believe that the cam has broke, but i do believe that the timming chain has broke. :( (God i hope) I had no oil anywhere and no blow by but open to any ideas. I will be digging deeper this week, if it is the chain has anybody ran a geardrive?

Re: New Motor???

gear drives are not a good idea. they are less reliable than a chain. I work in a race engine shop and ive seen them come apart

Re: New Motor???

You don't want a gear drive, the knock sensor will be constantly picking up false knock. If the timing chain is broken after 1500 miles, it was probably installed wrong.

Re: New Motor???

Ok, no grear drive. I keep running the hole thing thru my mind I dont know what I did wrong. The timeing set had to be the most straight foward peice of the motor build.

Re: New Motor???

pull off a valve cover and turn over the engine. see if any rockers move, this will tell you if the cam or the timing chain is your issue. I have seen in some rare cases cams by compcams break right before the distributor gear, seemed to be weak when used with high vol oil pump in circle track application with long time spent at high rpm so in your case its unlikely

Re: New Motor???

no gear drive. I just installed a edelbrock double roller chain and I cant see breaking that anytime soon.

Re: New Motor???

you can pull the oil filler neck and watch the valves move. no need to pull the cover just yet.

Re: New Motor???

Ok guys pulled the oil cap and i have no valve train movement. In a way that is good news, hopeing the key way broke or somthing simple. At least i know it is not a faital break. (GJP) Were did you order you double roller chain set? Did you order it for the 4.3 or just a SBC.
