Took my truck for a spin tonight truck was screaming up past 3k on rpm. no shifting

Slowed it down and tried to go from a stop and its winding up and really reving up hard core.

Going almost up to 3k. Something is not right. Maby I blew the trans? I notice super hard 2nd shifts before all this. 2nd gear would really crack hard.

Oh Boy

Definitely check your trans fluid level...Just check it to make sure it shows on the dipstick, then check when hot in park.

Both very good suggestions. TV cable is pretty easy to adjust, and fluid is super easy.

Thanks everyone. Just got a chance in the daylight to get a look at whats happening. I just looked at trans-rad connections all looks good. Looked for any leaks or oil. Pulled the dip stick and the fluid is blacker than coal.

Something burn up and burn out

Re: Not a expert Plz help.

Turns out I need to get my eyes checked out. I pulled the Oil dip stick and concluded it was black. I ended up pulling the correct dip stick and the fluid was low. I warm up, check with in N/P -low. I put some ATF in but truck is still not shifting correct. I was under truck inspecting and put a socket on the trans pan bolts and most of them were loose. Not real loose but able to be cranked on.

Truck will move at a slow speed or idle wont pick up right away... revs up to around 4k before it starts to move. Fluid is level is within measure now

Congratulations. You wore it out, rather than busted it. The forward clutch is gone. Trans clutches are like brake pads. Eventually they wear out. Same thing happened to my WhiteTy. The forward clutch wore out. Usually a SyTy trans out-right breaks something long before frictions wear out.

Re: Not a expert Plz help.

I ended up only taking truck around the block, and it had revved up and not shifted. I wheeled it back home and checked the fluid again. Seemed to be spot on.

Called a neighbor over for a second opinipon ( Old trans guy) and had him give me his take.

He did not know how to adjust the TV. Here I explain that I took truck for a short scat, truck revs up and dont shift like it was before 3k. It was more gradual. I asked him to please come for a ride. (he is disabled) Here he jumps in my truck and starts reving the daylights out of it telling me its running rich and has it pegged at 3k. anyway I tried to tell him if thats what your going to do( rev truck and talk loud so I cant hear) maby we should not take it for a ride. He insisted . shifts way down into 1 like were going to a race. I told him this is not where the problem is, Its when in OD. He did the normal 1-2-3 shifting. gently. Told me it was OK. shifting amazing. As im thinking hes out of his MIND!

Anyway Long story short- He comes to test and diagnose, It does not do any of the symptoms I have been battling all day.

I dumped a good qt of trans fluid inside the fill tube- My thought is : my short little test run was not enough to pump through and get good pressure ( seems to be OK now) But is it really?

Re: Not a expert Plz help.

So it's OK with the shifter in D1, D2, and D3, but "won't go" when the shifter is in D4 ("overdrive)" ?

I forgot this test. If above is true, the forward clutch is gone. The trans has to come out and be rebuilt.

Re: Not a expert Plz help.

It was the case earlier, He did the motion 1-2-3-. and it seemed like did smething to fix. I told him right away that it was in OD or 4? I usually run my truck in that gear.

Truck was really giving problems untill he rode in truck. Now it shifts fine. Was the fulid low?

At this point im more concerned about a actual part worn like a converter or the forward clutch?
I would not know how to make the call or run the tests further.

Maby it will be a intermitten problem

Re: Not a expert Plz help.

Truck worked and smoothed me over for 1 day. I took a ride up to see my dad and as soon as I pulled on his street the truck pulled the same symptoms.

Yesterday DaveP mention a worn something? I forget I dont even see his message in my thread. SOmething about a forward imput shaft? did you delete dave? I dont see that paragraph.
Anyway to move on from that,

Revs up to around 3k before the truck actually starts to move. RPM is skyrocketing to around 4000rpm before a shift. Real loud and no power.

Now here I am again same problems. I dont know how to adjust the TV cable. I notice when truck is in N, it revs up to around 2k, and when put in OD it really slams into hard and bucks.
Slowing down I felt a munching type feeling like say a small vibration with a teeth noise- happned real quick.

Re: Not a expert Plz help.

I would say your trans is toast. Revving to get it to move indicates the trans pump is shot. I just bought a 1995 tbird for my daughter (newest project), and it does the same thing. Rev it in gear and it will eventually engage. Plan on a trans rebuild.
