is it really worth the money, time, and effort? how much is expected to spend on an odd fire?

Depends on your goals.
I don't think it's worth the hassle unless you have a big budget and have big HP goals, with a fairly expensive budget that allows for an oddfire.
A computer & sensors will run you nearly $4000. A fuel system that supports a horsepower level of an oddfire will cost you almost $2000. A drivetrain that will stand up to that kind of power will cost you.. egads.. a lot. A turbo & intercooler for that power level will be $2500-3000. You will probably use custom headers at this level.. Bowtie block $2500 or more.
Just giving you some kind of idea. You don't build an oddfire motor for stock computer and stock turbo.
