Off to a bad start

I just recently bought ty #2392 and so far it’s off to a bad start. I haven’t made it a full day without something going wrong. I bought it for 5k from a used car dealer with the check engine light on and the idle high. The first day at the shop I did a tune up, flushed all the fluids, replaced the IAC valve and took out the front driveshaft to get rebuilt. I get about a mile down the road and the check engine light comes back on and it’s running rough again so I turn around and bring it back to the shop. It turns out to be a few vacuum lines falling off. I leave to go home again and a few miles down the road smoke start pouring out of the hood. I pull into a parking lot to find a big pile of trans fluid under it and a broken trans line. I picked it up yesterday from the shop and get it home to find a pile of antifreeze under it this morning. It turned out to be the water pump needing to be replaced. Does anyone have some advice for a car that has probably been sitting before it was sold?

Re: Off to a bad start

Yeah there sure is a lot of things that can go wrong with these trucks. Here is a list of things I would do.

Plugs
Wires
New Gas
Replace all vacuum lines
Replace intercooler water lines
Check to see if the intercooler pump is working.
Find out how much boost that thing is actually making
Get a new fuel pump, fuel filter & fuel pressure regulator
Find someone with Datamaster

There are some other guys on here that will have some really good advice for you.

dont be discouraged. i experienced similar problems when i purchased my ty. the first things i did were to replace lines and sensors. have you checked the compression yet?

My Ty sat for quite awhile before I bought it as well. I bought it July of 2004, and the last receipt I have from previous owner was June of 2001. Only 100 miles on it between that time. I only got to put about 2500 miles on it before it started puking oil from every seal possible. Yet it was bone dry when I bought it. I however did not find all this out until after I tore it apart and I was going through the bag of receipts I got when I bought it. Now look how it sits.

sounds right for a nj truck but for 5k if they are your only problems be very happy

Do you do your own work? if not I would suggest going to a trade school for a couple of years first thing. It would be cheaper than sending it to a "mechanic" every time it breaks :rotf:

But seriously, sounds like that high idle was the vacuum lines all along, it probably never needed a IAC...See if you can get your $ back on that one.

My parents own an auto repair shop so its me and my dad working on the truck, well mostly him but im starting to learn. The check engine light was for the IAC. The vaccum lines came off after we replaced it.

The dealer i bought it from had no clue what it was so i offered him 5k and he accepted, so i got lucky on that part but hopefully it doesn't turn into too big of a money pit. i noticed it isn't running as strong/fast as my other one is. i'll be at the swapmeet so maybe someone could run a scanner on it to make sure everything is okay.

There really isn't any room to make DM runs at the swap meet.. but we'll see you there
