Oh, NOW I understand how to launch

Okay, so I went to Bandimere Speedway last night ang managed to run one 1/4 mile attempt. Pretty crappy, but I did manage to beat the modified Corvette next to me, so that was kind of cool for my first time out. So here's the specs:

75 degrees out
~5,800 feet altitude
full tank of 93 octane
160 thermostat
hotwired IC pump
first time driver!

So I got up there, staged, and I had just gotten my right foot of the brake and over to the gas and the friggin' lights dropped! The guy in the 'vette was a good 1/2 - 1 car length out when I managed to get on the gas and go.

By the time we got to the end of the track I was catching up with him steadily. That was kind of neat.

Here's the slip:

So anyway, I came home today and disabled my charcoal canister (which many of you may have noticed me bitchin' about recently) and then capped off my EGR - what the heck, I was bored. I also dropped in a K&N filter. Bored, I decided to take it around the corner and try again, and see if I could figure out how to launch this thing.

So I put it in nuetral, jammed the brake pedal down, revved it until the pedal was as far as it would go, then put it in Drive. Then, I put the pedal down and just held it. Whoa - to my surprise the boost guage started moving up and up and up!!! I had never realized this was how to launch! Doh! So it got to just past the first line (stock gauge) and I let it go...

Whoooooooooooooooooooooooosh!

Wow, what a launch! Okay, that was cool, now I had a clue.

So I came back and my wife reminded me that I forgot to get her more beer, so I offered to take her to the store. In a hurry. ;)

So I went out around the corner again, vacuum locked the brakes, and started building boost. This time I figured I would see how much boost I could build. Well I'll be damned when the Ty started moving forward even with the brakes jammed down! I pushed the brakes harder, and as the left side of the truck started rising up and up - like 6" (happy truck, huh? ;) ) the left wheels started breaking loose on the pavement - and I was not moving! I finally let go of the brake and

DAAAAAMMMMMMMNNNNN

For the next 15 minutes I kept repeating to Amy "That was fun!"

:D

I am planning on it - Will has a buddy with a old, dead catalytic converter which I am considering knocking out, putting on, and then running 118 octane race gas. He says I can just unplug the wastegate solenoid and run full boost.

That kind of scares me, personally, but I think it might be fun. That's not going to destroy my engine, is it? This is a 92 Ty with 8,000 original miles on it and everything is STOCK.

Still smells new... Heh! :D

holy shit no.... do not unplug the wastegate actuator... oh my god no.... you will see 30 + psi which will torch your motor. but it would be fast so hey if it was me ..I wouldnt try it. BC I've done it and it cost me a motor.

If your nervous, hook up a scantool.
Do a part throttle blast.
Make sure it doesn't run lean from overruning the stock fuel pump or no AFPR.
Run a little more the next time.
If your truck is misbehaving, don't push it any harder.

My O2's are 920's and no knock when I run mine like that on the scantool.
Netted a 13.6@99... WOOOHOO! Almost stock at sea level! :D
I'd be worried if it was running 12's or something.

Strubie coathangered his WasteGate shut and ran a 12.80 that way from what I have heard, now THAT would be pushing the stock pump a little hard.

Then again, I have a GM warranty, so don't go breaking your truck on my account.
Plus yours is a virgin, I don't want the responsibility of MY OWN TRUCK...

Don't try and make me look like an idiot here, James...
Scantool, Scantool, Scantool.

I ran a 13.6, "spring cleaned", 920 O2's, 14 degs of adv, no knock and 20lbs of boost that way.
If a 13.6 Blows a stock motor, I'm getting a lightning or something...

What did you run with yours that way?

Have you ever run something at Bandimere?
5800ft!
That isn't even in the NHRA Correction Sheet!

On a scantool it sure does look like it's bleeding boost...
I think if you were going to get 30lbs out of a stock turbo, you'd be needing to weld (or wire) the wastegate shut so it CAN'T open.
From what I see the wastegate appears to open just from the volume alone...

rig a bleed off valve for your wastegate like maybe something off a ice box water line kit. if you bleed off the signal pressure the waste gate will not see full pressure. It only takes a little.

It might be good to laern your ride better first. Beins how you seem to be just getting the feel for it.

i highly recommend agianst disconnecting your wastegate, the stock chip only reads up to around 15 psi, if you go past that, it wont be supplying enough fuel for that amount of air, 118 octane or not, you stand a good chance of biffing something in your engine

Ah, no worries. I am at close to 6000 feet and I like to take things slow. :)

But asking questions is always fun.

So is drinking. Okay, I am trashed, going to bed now. :)

Read, Read, Read. Take a week off from work and read everything on this site and the "others". You wil be amazed on the wealth of information about these trucks. When done reading, you will know exactly what you want to do and how to do it and hopefully your 8k mile truck will not suffer from it.

No worries, I am not an idiot, I've owned something like 54 cars now, and have worked on all sorts of stuff. I'm not so crazy as to blow up a perfectly good motor on a 8k mile vehicle, either! :D
