Other Exhaust Options

Well, with atr down the tubes, it makes it hard to get stainless cat-backs now.

Does anybody make them still? as far as I can tell, nope. Next option, does anyone know if borla still does custom orders for ty's? (one would assume they still have the plans laying around on how to make 'em...)

Last option, does anybody know of a good bend shop that does stainless? preferably in SE mich... since a shop will need the truck to custom fit the pipes.

I Knew I should've ordered from atr when I had the chance a while back... but decided on tires instead, oh well... live and learn.

borla still did the systems last time I checked. I have one on my ty and it sounds great. This was about 6 months ago, when I checked.

I looked for borla and never found one for my sy. Where can you get them at? I might want that for my ty when I get one.

Not sure where you heard that...Last year before I got mine, I spoke to an internal source that I worked with on SEMA projects. He said they stopped making them a while ago. And that they destroyed the jigs to make them

Re: Other Exhaust Options

if I were you, this is what I would do.

buy a 3" high flow cat. install that yourself if you can (because most muffler places wont install cats)

then have them bent the pipes needed for everything cat back WITHOUT a muffler ;)

the turbo and cat provide enough sound deadning and the cat will keep the boost creep in check, muffler really isnt needed IMO.

I agree, go custom its the only way to go now IMO.

Re: Other Exhaust Options

I guess I need to find a good pipe bender that knows what he's doing with stainless then.

Although, captain morgan, my neighbors would KILL me if I had two loud cars. They've already tried changing the bylaws to force me to get rid of my '72 Cutlass Supreme. Some people just don't appreciate fine automobiles.

trust me man, it will NOT be "loud" without a muffler, ask anybody here that runs without or has run without a muffler before.

What he said! I don't run a cat OR muffler & love the sound. Surprisingly enough, its not that loud at all...

W/ that said though, better have some solid boost control before going this renegade route.

Re: Other Exhaust Options

i also took it to the shop and got custom 3 inch bent up, about 250 bucks including welding in a 3 inch cutout and a cat. I think they sound perfectly quiet with a cat and stright pipes. but once i open up the cutout i usually leave it that way for a couple weeks

Re: Other Exhaust Options

what's the stock cat i/o diameters anyway?

w/o the cost of a muffler, I can buy a 3"cat... I don't trust my boost control enough to be without one.

Of course when you say "not loud", do you mean 1968 gto loud, or 2005 gto loud? I'm a bit pensive about going muffler-less, but if it isn't bad like you say, it's definately a good way to save a few $$$(actually, that just means I'll spend it elsewhere... hmmm, maybe some headers?)

stock cat is 2.5" in/out

and by not loud, neither GTO senario would fit, it will still be quieter than either 68 or 05 GTOs WITH mufflers.

I ran our Sy down the road a few houses and back with open headers, sounded like a dragster:rotf:

Re: Other Exhaust Options

Well I doubt I'll be going for open headers anytime soon...

But is there a noticable difference between keeping a 2.5" cat back or switching to a 3" cat back? w/o mufflers that is. Just wondering if it is worth the cost to put in a new cat to affix larger pipes. To be honest, .5" doesn't sound like it would make too much of a difference. Most likely I'll put in a 3"system, but if money gets in the way('tis the season to spend every dime), I'll have to reconsider.

and thanks for all the input so far on this.

Re: Other Exhaust Options

On mine, I have the stock cat for now. After the cat I went with 3" pipe without a muffler and the sound is nice and mellow. when I need to change the cat I plan on a 3" system from the turbo back including the cat.

I think you going to have a hard time finding anyone that can bend stainless. Most stainless exhausts are fabricated.
