Paint question

Dropped my stockers off to be powdercoated black, and the guy said that the center cap bolt was chromed, so they couldn't powdercoat that...it wouldn't stick to it. Any ideas on what I can do myself to paint it black? Sand them and paint them black myself? Or, am I just SOL in getting these to stay black since they are chromed? Any other ideas anyone has, please let me know.

Im sure you could scuff them up and use autonmotive etching primer on them and use one of those mini paint touch up bottles to paint thats what I used to paint the letters on the upper intake. I bet youd have to touch them up after snugging them up with the key though.

That's an idea I can try...definitely worth a shot and the mini bottles will make touch-up easy once I snug them up. Thanks! :tup:

Go to a speed shop, they might have black chrome bolts in stock or check online(jegs/summit) or maybe even a Honda/Yamaha motorcyle shop might have something fancy in black.

I have hex head bolts for my center caps. You could always get a different non locking bolt for the center caps.

I thought I saw black chrome hex bolts @ the local ACE hardware. When I was refinishing my wheels, I just grabbed a cheap flat black hex for mockup. Then I got stainless hex bolts for the finished use. But I won't have my truck outside long to worry about theft.

I"ve never had a problem powder coating over chrome. Scuff and shoot. As long as the chrome in in good shape. :2cents:

Take to a chrome shop----they can strip them down for you

Your talking about just the one bolt per wheel that holds the centercap in place correct? If so, instead of going through all the rigamarole of scuffing, painting, taking to a chrome shop or whatever, go to your local hardware store and buy 4 new ones. Take one of the screws with you to be sure of size.

Paint will always chip and peel on screws. Especially if you take the wheels off and on alot(racing) Just get black ones and polish the surface with wax. They will shine like gloss black powder.

I'd help ya out with that, but I already scuffed my chrome ones up and put a coat of primer and painted them black. It's holding up so far, so we'll see...
