plasti dip the cladding?

So in my quest to repaint the truck and figure out the best way to do it under a budget but still get longevity out of it... an idea struck my brain... why not plasti-dip the cladding? It's something I think I can tackle myself and would be cheap. And if it ever gets damaged, it would be very easy to fix. Dont have to worry about it fading (i think). Also would be nice because now it would be a thin line of rubber against the body, rubbing and shaking, vs bare plastic. So it wouldn't cause a rust line again.

Oh and no, I don't want to plasti-dip the whole truck. I like the gloss black paint (wouldn't mind navy blue tho...). But the matte grey or black of the cladding I think would look nice. Dunno what it is, but shinny cladding just doesn't look good in all black, or blue. The other colors do look good. Like the read on grey. Love that look. But gloss black on gloss grey... meh...

Anyone ever done this before? Seen it? Opinions? Anyone have any experience with plasti-dip?

I am interested in seeing how this turns out because I have been looking at other options for my cladding.

I did the front grille on my beater and it looked/looks good. Minor amount of fading.

I also did my rear tail lamp housings on my wx beater and it turned out good.

I recently sold a set of emblems which were done horrribly by Some one else. I did my take with chrome/plastidip emblems and im sure the guy who bought them is happy.

Sounds like a different approach. May be worth a shot?

You can buy spray cans, or a gallon a.d thin it down to spray a larger batch

I sprayed a broken sy arch with it... the plasti dip kinda stuck to well. It didn't peel off like it would a painted or chrome surface. It will scratch very easily. I would not recommend using it on unpainted cladding. :2cents:

I've sprayed unpainted cladding with it. Peeled fine after a year outside. Just get the right amount of coverage and it works good.

I used 3 medium thick coats. It didn't sit outside for a year but was dry... "you results may very". :dunno:
It still scratches easily.

Hmm... starting to sound like this wont last as long as I thought... I thought plastic dip was suppose to be tuff stuff. Like a smooth bed liner, sorta. Granted, if one of the cladding pieces gets chipped it will be easy to strip it back down and re-dip it.

And it will only stick to painted cladding? I don't think mine is painted. I think its just faded plastic.

And from that picture, you can see why I want to repaint/dip the cladding. looks gawdy. :rotf:

You don't need to paint that, you just need to hit it with the right dressing (turtle wax) and fix the stickers.

Plastidip is a temporary solution. It doesnt hold up to sun or weather, it scratches easy... just take it off and get a body shop to spray it... id think it would be under 1000 to have the whole set sprayed

1. Just go out and buy some Mother Back to Black. 2. Apply a coat and wait 1hr. Remove coat. 3. Do it a total of 5times and you will be amaze at how well it looks. Then it just upkeep.

I dipped the old Ty , looked like it was holding up. But I would do the Turtle wax
trim restorer, that's what I put on the sy cladding and works great

Re: plasti dip the cladding?

I did a complete car and its still going strong 1.5 years now. it will stick to plastic painted or unpainted it doesn't matter, you just have to clean surface well before dipping or else anything you spray will come out like crap.

my cladding looked really crappy- I used back to black on it and it comes up great- just have to do it every few months and its a little time consuming.

Back to crap....that shit washes off too easily....wizards makes a good one called black renew that seems to last as little longer...Eagle one also made a trim gel... that was spectacular but quit making it...I'm tempted to try some of the wipe renew stuff just for shits and let people know the low down on it...keep ya posted on that one.

I'm sorry, but the only time that I had the problem that you talk about is when I didn't have enough coatings on it. At the meet that I went to on Sat, I was asked if I had painted mine because it looked like it, I told then that I used Back to Black and they were going to try it. Whatever works for you.....

Re: plasti dip the cladding?

Plasti-dip is a possability and the durability is OK, especially if you hit it with glossifier. Or, even some of the metal flake glossifiers could look cool, especially the copper.

If you want more info check out www.dipyourcar.com

BTW, doing a good job with spray cans is very difficult, most professional dippers use electric spray guns. As far as scratches go, if you spray it with detail spray after it fully dries it helps prevent scratches, and gives it a little sheen.

As for restoring that plastic, its absolutely possible. Check out your options. First stop, try zaino and Adams detailing products, and I'm sure a search could offer some help too (its not an uncommon problem).

Can't you do one small section to see how it holds up and looks. Since it is not permeant you can always remove it.
