Popping Noise

A little help here. When I drive the Typhoon, everytime I stop or go to accelerate, I hear a popping noise coming from the undercarriage. Don't know if its the axles or the prop shaft.
Any ideas what it could be?

Re: Popping Noise

A pop is generally from a CV style joint, so I'd venture to guess that its a front halfshaft. Main driveshaft and rearend is a clunk.

It could also be a u-joint on the way out. I have had a couplemake some weird noises.

Stab it and steer it
Re: Popping Noise

What happens, worse or not, if you turn sharp? And again, what happens while backing up? IMHO if it gets worse it a CV joint.

Re: Popping Noise

Is it a pop or more of a bang or thud? I'd start by checking all the front grease points. I definately need to grease the Ty since it creaks and squeaks over every bump. Bad balljoints will make noise, along with loose bed mount bolts. Check the spare tire if you have it installed, along with the exhaust components.

Re: Popping Noise

When making tight turns or backing up you can hear it. This leads me to believe it could be the CV joints...

I had a Bravada with a 'noise' sort of as you describe. Didn't do it every time, but when it did, it was LOUD.

It was because the viscous clutch was starting to seize. On takeoff, or a reverse-to-forward shift, it would really 'pop', because the drivetrain was all loaded up. When the v-clutch 'un-stuck', it would release a lot of energy, hence the noise.

Try driving a few days with the front drive shaft removed, and see if it goes away...

I'll give it a try and see what I get...
