Powdercoating prep

Just got off the phone with a powdercoating place around here and described my setup to them and the prices are great, said they would do for 25 a rim but they would have to be bead blasted first and that would be about another 20 a rim, so bascially 45 a rim to get them done.

What is was wondering is do they really have to be beadblasted? I have the silver ZR1's and am not sure is that is straight paint of a silver powdercoating on it, cause he said if it was powdercoated previously then they MIGHT be able to just powdercoat over it, but honestly I figure it might be better to pay and have it stripped down totally.

Any opinions?

Bdubb, I know you mess with powdercoating, any recommendations for dealing with these guys?

Also found a place locally to Dallas that totally refurbishes a rim for 105 a rim, includes starightening and any blemishes. Just in case anyone needs rims done in the area.

When I had my ZR-1's powdercoated to match my cladding, the wheel's had to be bead-blasted before painting. I do not believe they can powdercoat your wheel's with the stock finish. My wheel's had the silver finish and bead-blasted to the primer coat. Your estimate price powdercaoting with paint removal is cheap, mine were $70.00 a piece here in Naples.

Hey Don,
I would go ahead and spend the extra money to ensure that the powder coating is done right and is going to stay. You want to make sure the coating gets well bonded to the surface. Just my .02

any bare metal surface thats getting powdercoated needs to be textured (beat blasted) in order for the powdercoat to stick to that surface. Powdercoated will stick to powdercoating, but even then alot of times it stripped and cleaned.

thanks for the input guys, i figure at 20 bucks a rim, i might as well get them blasted to make sure. I was concerned about the price but the shop said they have a lifetime guarantee on any peeling of the sureface, as long as they are blasted. Naturally not against rock chips or anything, but they do guarantee against peeling around a rock chip.

Man I really wanted ZO6 rims but just can't afford it, so I guess I am going to join the band wagon and have black ZR1's. Not going high gloss though, I think about a 80-90% would look better. Anyone got any pics of about 80%, I have seen high gloss and the duller finish, just wondering about in between

I plan on starting my tranny mods and PTE install this Saturday, yeah........hopefully I won't have to post to many questions :wink:

yeah I figure the semi-gloss black powder coat on my zr1's would look tough with my painted caldding. Not even to mention my "Jack in the Box" Dallas Cowboys anntenna thingy, got pics if anyone wants to see. Really says don't muck with me :lol:
