Prospective new Sy owner

Ha, well i am about to join this community (in the owner sense) I found a listing for a 1991 Syclone with 89xxx miles for $8750. Its located in the Bay Area and i will be going to take a look at it sometime over the weekend. I already know i will be buying it as long as everything checks out.

The owner states there has never been any serious repairs made to it, save for the front diff being replaced, Is that a common issue with these vehicles? I have been reading on the forums quite about for the last day or two (not much else to do at work when you work 10pm-7am) And havent noticed anything about them.

I was hoping for some pointers as to what certain things are vital to check out when taking a look at one of these for a prospective buyer. Anything that is common and easy to find that should be noted, etc. I have wanted a Sy for many years ever since a friend of mine bought one that i used to race around with and let me drive it a few times.

Last but not least, Is there anyone in the Bay Area, CA that could recommend a body shop, as he said there are a few small blemishes in the paint, one particularly on the roof, but supposedly nothing horrible. And also someone who might have one of these datamaster devices that could help me check it out after i buy it (if it comes to that) before i purchase this device myself, or the other one since thats what it seems everyone is switching over to now.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

Welcome to future Sy Ownership :) There are many of us around Northern Cali. Buy a set of tools and starting reading ;)

Re: Prospective new Sy owner

Definitely already have a humongous set of tools as i have owned an mk3 supra turbo for many years and have had various problems during them. Also have a lot of friends who are highly knowledgeable in the turbo area (one in particular with a 70 cougar 302 turbo, fast car) I read over the buyers guide link i saw in another post and that gave me some starting points, just hoping to hear of any other possibilities people have encountered.

Also, does someone here run carfaxes for members? If so i will have the vin number sometime tomorrow hopefully and would love to see what is contained in it.

welcome aboard, it sounds like you have found alot of the answer you are looking for. In stock form the trucks are very reliable, but when you do start modding them, they did tend to become high maintaince, but I think it's worth it. We do have a carfax area, look in the stolen truck/vin check forum, and post the vin there.

I would suggest doing a full tune up when you get it, something to also look into is datamaster or another similar logging program.

1st off welcome. Where in the bay are you? If you are close to me I would be happy to take a look at it for you. Show you what to look for.

Re: Prospective new Sy owner

Yeah that is the one, but when we spoke today he said someone was flying up from san diego that was interested in buying it, but was trying to drop the price quite a bit. So he said if the guy tries to go too low then he will keep me in mind and tell the guy sorry but i cant go that low. Other then that, if anyone happens to see any others listed anywhere please let me know as i have wanted a syclone for a verrryyyy long time and being this close to having one finally and now the possibility of not getting it sucks some huge .... well you know what i mean, right? :D

Ahh and btw im in Fremont, but work in San Jose across the street from Lundy post office

Last question was i see alot of 2" cowl hoods on these, and so far ive only been able to find them made by harwood. Is that the brand of choice, or am i crazy?

Re: Prospective new Sy owner

Yeah i saw that one, anyone know anything about it? I assume your referring to the white/grey ty in santa clara for 13K? with forged pistons and such, kinda hesitant on that one, more a fan of the sy than anything. But who knows, maybe ill go take a look at it.
