Hello.

L35 with Cometic and ARP bolts.

What torque manual or bigger? For oil and ARP moly different torque. Thread locker like oil or ARP moly?
Need sealant for Cometic?

Thank you.

Re: Q about install heads with Cometic (+)

Cometic tells you to install them with everything "brakeclean dry". I dont remember but i believe the arp studs are like 80 ftlbs with their moly lube on the threads. Im sure the arp bolts are different torque spec though.

I would use the ARP moly. I used 80ft. lbs. with ARP studs. Brake clean head/block, ensure you have proper surface finish. You can install gaskets dry as recommended by Cometic or spray a light coat of copper on them. I have done it both ways.

+1 for copper spray. I did my cometics on the 4.3 dry as they suggested and had poor results. I have always coated MLS gaskets with copper coat and have had great success

Re: Q about install heads with Cometic (+)

I just put on FEL-pro mls gaskets, ARP studs at 70flbs (7/16 studs) DO NOT spray the gaskets, clean surface with Lacquer thinner Not brake cleaner leaves A resudue on the surface thinner does not. any more questions fell free to ask.

Re: Q about install heads with Cometic (+)

for the love of god use some kinda sealer on the threads going into block/water jacket.. my engine builder says he uses black RTV on studs but i've been told pipe dope also etc etc.. All i know is ARP studs with the moly lube THEY say to use end up leaking coolant out the heads like a B##%#. after letting mine run i have coolant sitting in the low spots around the rockers really awesome. Pulling heads to fix it soon..which really sucks with adj roller rockers on studs.

lol. The moly lube is only for the nut end. It provides no sealing ability. It is only used to get a truer, more consistent torque reading than what is possible on a dry surface or surface coated motor oil.
It's ok, a friend of mine, that's a gearhead, used teflon tape on the threads of his head bolts. Then he couldn't figure out why he kept loosing water in the radiator & why his plugs were wet. So do not try to use teflon tape!
We all learn something everyday.

You can use the ARP teflon thread sealer on the block side to seal the threads. I used this thread sealer last time & had no leaks.
I chose not to use the silicone sealer due to the fact it's a PITA to clean out during a tear-down.

Lacquer thinner or acetone to clean the block & head mating surfaces.
I have no input on the copper coat.

Re: Q about install heads with Cometic (+)

Ok read all the stuff on installing studs, put mine in with the red locktite & never had A problum sence. only thing that works is red locktite on the studs (ONLY ON THE BLOCK SIDE) molly lube on the nut side. Will not ever leak agin, pipe dope does not work, teflon tape don't work. been there done that, Red locktite only. If you don't use it you will be pulling the heads off agin. Down side is that you might not ever get them out agin. head studs 2 years now no leaks.

Re: Q about install heads with Cometic (+)

ya looks good, just make sure not to touch the gaskets when putting them on & clean the heads & deck with lquarior thinner & make sure it is really dry before putting the heads on. here is the gaskets you want, there $60 from Autozone, they have to order them there sold indavigual @ $30.00 Ea. so you have to order 2 of them

if you were closer I would give you A hand with them.

They look like the felpro MLS's. Prob. are the MLS that Felpro makes for trickflow. Good luck let me know how it works out for ya.

Re: Q about install heads with Cometic (+)

I have never heard of using red locktite on the head studs. I would like to hear what ARP would say to that but i would imagine it sounding something like "JESUS CHRIST NO". I just cant see that being a good idea. Do you red locktite your intake bolts too?? Some of those go into the water jacket too.

I have always used the teflon paste that is good for fuel, oil, etc and never had a problem with leaks on the head studs even after being apart many many times.
