Really bad boost spike

I have a really bad boost spike. If I punch the gas, the boost spikes to 20lbs and I can hear the engine ping. If I ease onto the gas and keep it from spiking it levels off at 16 which tells me the WG is set fine.

I had a boost spike condition before but I had a hollowed out cat. I was told that putting a cat on would fix the issue. I have installed a ATR exhaust and high flow cat and its still as bad as ever.

Do the actuators wear out in these trucks? Would it be wise to replace it? Is it something else?

A full service tuneup was just done.

check all of the vaccumm lines to and from the turbo espically.

make sure there run correctly
if they check out ok, take your wastegate off and check that it isnt sticky

If you are still factory turbo, get an external wastegate mounted on the crossover and call it quits. The stock integral wastegate sucks...and will only lead to more headaches in the future.

yeah the problem is I am in CA and if its not BS - CARB legal they might fail me. Trust me I am a fan of the external too.

I already have one smog nightmare with the Supra. I dont need two.

I would check the vacuum lines and make sure the wastegate arm is set properly.

Would the fact that it levels off at 16 when I ease onto it rule the adjustment out? I have a feeling it is either sticky like mentioned or vacuum lines are bad. I checked the one vac line going to the WG briefly and it is still the original plastic line. Maybe I should take that out and put a regular line in. I still have several black silicone hoses left over from a hose swap on another car.

There is a fatory bulletin for an over boost condition, due to wiring that runs in the top pass side corner of the dash. The over boost condition usually happen when the A/C is triggered on. This only happened to Sy's and I think it was from vin#0000 to 1500........ Good luck.

No it wouldn't rule it out. I over tightened my wastegate and on downshift it spiked. The ECM has delay to help build boost, but by tightening it essentially delays the wastegate control. If it is delayed too much, the ECM can't control it quick enough to prevent overboost. I also have a high flow cat and my boost creeps up to 16psi. So that may not be helping either. Try the vacuum lines first as they are easiest to access (and should be repalced) unless you have you fenders out already.

The recall is for original bracket design being able to scuff the boost control wire when pulling the ECM down. Tookycat had this problem and the ECM had no boost control. The previous owner also blew 3 motors in something 10K miles...

Is a good test, to see if the boost solenoid is bad, to connect the WG to the compressor housing? That should set it at WG spring levels correct?

I replaced one VAC line on the WG side so far but didnt get a chance to do the other or mess with the actuator. I am going for the simple stuff first.
