SyTyless......for now!
Re: serpentine belt!!

give it a little push with your fingers? :dunno: The 4.3 is one of the easier engines to change a belt on. Main thing is to make sure its centered in the grooved pulleys, and it will self-align once its going.

Re: serpentine belt!!

should take about 20 seconds to change the belt. and that's with 1 hand holding the tensioner.

Just wondering, how many people think this guy should NOT be working on SyTy's, or any other vehicle for that matter? :rotf:

Cut this guy some slack. He is 16. Confidence isn't at its highest when you are young. You may have changed a belt a thousand times, but this could be number one for him.

OK, I didn't notice his age. I'll go sit in the corner for a while.

Re: serpentine belt!!

He is actually doing the work before asking questions:tup:

Yeah, he did, but he ran into a problem and then asked, at least he didn't start it up and end up running a belt or something else. also known as trial and error or costing more money than he saved by doing it himself.

Re: serpentine belt!!

Keep on asking questions if you have them. Parts cost alot of money. And not getting some parts on the correct way could cause you lots of problems.

Everyone has different amounts of experience it everything we do.

I wish that I knew more about operating a computer. I cant even post a picture like you did showing the belt and pulleys.

Re: serpentine belt!!

this reminds me af a funny story about 5 years ago i went to the all truck nationals in carlisle pa i drovethe sy . i was there friday night all was good ran into a few sy/ty guys and we all went out to dinner together saturday night i pulled into the parking lot at hoses and the stering wheel jerks and the belt comes off . i open the hood and the pulley for the power stering was broke so i take the belt off and linp it back to the hotel. next day try to finde a new pump no luck so i limp it to pep boys i pry off the pulley and try to get a shorter belt to delete the pump and get home. well the temp is about 90 i go in the store and went threw about 5 different belts and burn the hell out of my arms but finally finde one that works.i drive it back to NY no power stering bot i sure the hell now know how to change the belt real good. so the only way to learn is to try and ask for help then u know the right way too.:2cents:

Re: serpentine belt!!

If you had that hard of a time changing the belt then you are doing something wrong. How exactly are you relieving the tensioner? Also what is the last pulley you are trying to slip the belt over?

When I was 16, confidence was at an all time high for me! I knew it all back then and nobody was as smart as me:devil:!

Every year I got older, I realized how much I still don't know and now I am just a big dummy!

Hat's off for self-teaching yourself about your truck. This place has some of the best teachers. Better to learn here than after the tow truck drops your truck off at GMC for a $1500 lesson.

Re: serpentine belt!!

i find the best way to change the belt and the quickest, is to use a 16mm ratchet wrench. i prefer the ratchet wrench because you can precisely position it where you want it, to far down and you'll catch your fingers on the water pump pulley, to high and you don't have enough umf to pull it up enough to slip the belt on or off, with a regular box end wrench it might be positioned completely wrong and be a pita to pull the tensioner up, or catch your fingers.

and with a ratchet and socket i catch my hands on the fan.

Where are you supposed to relieve the tensioner? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm a newbie :(

Stab it and steer it
Re: serpentine belt!!

No Prob. Look back at the pic for reference. Put a wrench on that long bolt in the center and turn to the left against the spring in the tensioner.

EDIT: If you need to change the tensioner pulley that long bolt is left hand thread. Meaning, once the belt is off, you turn it to the right to remove it.

Re: serpentine belt!!

So when you put the belt back on, when you turn that bolt to the right it wont come off, correct?

You'll find when you remove the belt the spring in the tensioner just rotates it around to the right and you just leave it there. The spring is now "relaxed" and, if necessary, you can remove the tensioner by unscrewing the attachment bolt (normal thread, turn left to remove). It has a locater pin on the back so you can put it back correctly.
