Server Build Log (Syty image gallery and more)

Here is the server Mandi, Harmon and I went in on. The parts are scheduled to show up tomorrow (3/17/2011).

Here is a summary of the build.

The goal is to build the server to be able to expand as needed. The motherboard can house 2 6 core Intel Xenons (12 Processors) and up to 96 GB Ram. The case can house 22 HD's so we shouldn't run out of space for a long time.

Our inital build is a Quad Core Xenon, 24 GB Ram, 1 TB Raid 1 system drive, and 6 TB Raid 5 Storage drive. We will be running several Hyper-V VM's on Server 2008 R2. (1 Webserver, 1 Database server, 1 E-mail server).

We will be using this for more than just a syty image gallery so that is why we built it to be expandable. We will be moving chat to it and hopefully upgrade to the newest version of chat.

Haven't laughed that much in a while.. but in all seriousness, If you guys are willing/wanting I have a place that this server could reside, that has significant bandwidth available. I would not charge a dime. I can provide remote access to it via VPN. Nice to see you are using hyper v rather than VMware.

interesting, looks like overkill to me but what do i know..

why windows? gallery/php/mysql run quite a bit better on a linux OS..

i get the virtualization thing and you shouldn't run into any bottlenecks for quite awhile with that setup.. what speed are the disks? raid 5 is slow but you shouldn't see any performance issues until you are getting thousands of hits by that time i'm sure verizon might wonder what you are hosting too

Talk about "overkill is not enough"... you could run a small research department on that thing. Hope you've got a good, cool place to put it.

Kinda surprised that you'd use 2008R2 as the base OS, given that you're going to run VMs anyway.
The VMWare ESXi hypervisor is free, and is *much* better performing than 2008R2 as a host.

We have many VMs in both environments, and ESX kicks the crap out of Windows as a VM host. 2008R2 was a big step forward for MS, but they're playing catch-up in the VM world.

I can understand using what you're comfortable supporting, though.

A really good idea to do things via VMs... you can keep traffic and processes isolated and if one goes rogue, you only reboot the culprit causing the problem. Only cost is additional 2k8R2 server licenses.
Also very easy to clone the whole VM, and keep a backup of everything in case things go south.

Depending on the reliability you're looking for (and the licenses you have), you might look into mirroring the DB onto one of the other VMs. That way, if you ever had a failure of the DB VM, you could just redirect to the mirrored copy. Only cost is another SQL license.

I just spec'd out a couple blade servers that had dual hex-core and 132G of RAM... right around $12k a piece, but some of that was licensing costs. We can get 20-40 VMs on that, depending on how heavy they are. I fear RAM costs are gonna go up a bunch with what's going on in Japan right now, so now is the right time to buy.

Like Dig said, buy it now and get all of your electronics while you can. There's going to be a lot of chips unavailable soon due to the problems in Japan.

I hope that thing is not on the shelf in your bedroom closet becasue that thing is going to be LOUD. I have a few AX 100 ECM units in my LAN room and i have to say DAM they are loud and get really hot. They need to be cooled and a regular fan will not do it.

Of course not putting you down thats great that your doing this and if i am im sorry just want to give my 2cents!

Glad to see someone step up with $$ and effort to make this happen. I've known Paul for as many years as I have owned my typhoon. I regard him as a great friend. I know for a fact this will be a kick ass effort and be a valuable resource to the group.

People have come and gone, I've seen data lost in the past when information was "hosted" on someone trying their best hosting data at work, etc. All it takes is a employer to go out of business, have a lay off and those efforts were lost.

Having the server controlled by respected people in the community that will be around next year and beyond is a great resource. I am no server guy, but I relate it to a build on a syty. Everybody will have different build list. Doesn't make anyone better than the other. In the end if information pops up on my web browser quickly and reliable then it has done its purpose and done it well.

Glad to see some people put do more than talk.

the differences are WAY less than you make them out to be. Don't drink the koolaid and try/use/implement both you'll see there isn't that much of a difference.

each of them has their place, Vmware is more mature but overall performance they are neck and neck :tup:

One big difference is the USB Pass thru or USB Mapping that VMWare has. I have a couple of Server Programs that I can't use on Hyper-V because of the USB Dongle they need to have to run.

Anyway. Server is up and running. Chat, Code59 databases have been moved to it on Sunday. In the process of setting up the Webserver and all the software it needs so I can move chat, code59 and some other sites to it.

It isn't dead. I found that error on Sunday when I moved it. It is missing a table that I don't have in any of my backups for the last 6 months so I don't know how it wasn't broke before. I should have it fixed by tomorrow night. The pains of progress....... :-b
