Smoke on startup?

Wh eI goto start my ty in the morning, it puffs out light blue smoke then stops until I start it the next morning. Also I noticed my turbo seems to whine louder now. What could be causing this? Could oil be leaking into the turbo or something when it sits? Its kinda cool that the turbo is louder  but I'm thinking it might be a bad thing

Thanks for any help

its a very comon "thing", its even listed in the SyTy Buyers Guide, the valve seals are a very comon thing to leak oil into the cylinders while it sits for 24+ hours.

Re: Smoke on startup?

yep, my truck has done it since day one.

when it turns over(for the first time that day) it puffs one or two good puffs of light blue/white smoke.

valve stem seals are the obvious fix, but with these trucks getting to the heads seems to be a chore in it's self, good luck, i know i'll need it to ever get around to fixing this problem.

as far as turbo whing being more pronouced, it might be a warning sign of another problem all together, ie turbo oil seals going out or something along those lines.

every 4.3 i have does thats minus my syclone. valve seals will fix it. it can be done witht he heads on the truck. just have to fill the cylinders with air to hold the valves up

I would agree with all that’s been said although I’ve never done a valve seal job on a Sy.

However, IMO, you’d better have a look at the turbo. “New” noise from there can be a bad sign. It’s easy to remove the inlet and outlet hoses from the compressor section and look for wear and/or a damaged impellor on the inlet and any sign of oil at the outlet which would indicate problems.

Someone correct me here if I'm wrong but there should be NO play (movement) up and down and none to very little movement back and forth. Sometimes it can be hard to tell them apart so be careful. The manual calls for pushing the shaft in both directions and manually checking for rubbing or binding.

On the other hand if the noise is only there under boost it could be as simple as an air leak in the line from the turbo to the IC or elsewhere in the intake.

Hope it's the latter..

Hey Don,

No disrespect...Don't take this wrong, but from what I understand there should be a little up and down play, unless the turbo's primed with oil which there would be less up and down play....Also I always understood that any in and out play would likely make the turbo put out smoke or not turn freely and eventually fail......

Sounds like he needs the valve seals and a turbocharger, if the turbo's starting to make noise......

Hey, no problem. None taken.

hmm, wonder if my turbo is going to need replaced sooner then i thought.

it has no play i can notice up and down, but like an 1/8 inch in and out :dunno:

Hi Everyone

The smoke is most likely valve seals (Umbrellas). Not really a problem to change them if you have the tools. Being that I worked at a GMC dealership from 1995 to 1999. I worked on a lot of Typhoons and an occasional Syclone. I had the opportunity to tear down engines and work on any other problems they had. I recall changing a turbo on one because the owner felt his Ty was a bit slower than it used to be. The turbo (brand new in the box) had the same amount of up and down play as the old one. I was very surprised as I thought it would be tight. Well anyway I was smart enough to have saved that old turbo and I still have it to this day!

Re: Smoke on startup?

valve seals are a common problem on any gm product. i've seen trucks six months old puff smoke at start up. my does it about every time i start it, so i guess i'm gonna get around to changing them in a week or two. doesn't hurt anything but it gets old and is kinda embaressing my case. all you need is a 20 dollar tool and the fitting to pressurize the chamber through the spark plug hole. and i've had the vavle covers off on my ty and it really wasn't nearly as big of a deal as it looked like.

If you push it in, turn it with no drag, then pull it out and turn it with no drag AND there's no sign of oil I would say you're good to go.

Have you checked for air leaks? Did you check if the noise is only under boost?

Re: Smoke on startup?

How do you compress the springs with just the air holding the valve up?

Re: Smoke on startup?

I had a good look at the turbo when I went through the truck. All was well then, it had one very slightly bent fin, no shaft play to worry about though.

Did you end up putting that K&N filter on it? That will make the turbo seem louder for sure.

To change the seals you need a in car compressor and a bit of paitience. Not a big deal but a good afternoons work.

Re: Smoke on startup?

no, never changed anything on it yet. And for the spring compressor i was asking cuz I though tthey held the bottom of the valve on the underside of the head, how does it work with the head on? Do they come with just those plastic cap seals on the valves?

You can get on car ones that have a set of arms that grab the coils of the valve spring and pull up against the retainer. Kinda hard to explain but once you see one it will make sense.

Yep, a few tool companies make them.
I have a K-D Tools #2078. It works great and it's cheap.
http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/MAN34_TTW420.html
Basically, the tool grabs the top and bottom of the spring and you turn the knob at the top to compress the spring shorter. Once the spring is short enough, the retainers are then accessible. The shop air blowing into the spark plug hole just keeps the valve spring from falling into the cylinder when the springs/retainers are removed.
GM has the hard plastic seals (little white ones) and also the rubber seals. If I remember correctly, the rubber ones are better, use them on all intake and exhaust valves.
Hope this helps.
