so i'm driving down the street...

last night i'm driven down the street, and i cross a main road with a little bit of a bump in the middle of it, probably because of all the traffic, and i hear this small clink.... interesting, never did that before. so i pull into a parking lot to check it out, looking, looking... nothing, can't find a damn thing. so i git in my TY thinking it was a rock. about two miles further up the road, and only a mile from my house.. BAM!!!!, SLAP...SLAP. the POS front drive shaft shattered right outside the transfer case, breaking the yoke or what ever the mount is called, i've heard it called almost everything. anyway so with no other choice i have to gimp it home at 2mph. i get under it today and look around and take out the shaft.
 i'm going to pause a moment here to rant a little about the pure and utter.... i can't write the words on this site about what i think of the dealership parts department, i mean seriously even if a was in the deepest, darkest, most inert place in hell's vagina, i would NOT pay $2300 for a front prop shaft  , that's almost $1000 dollars a foot.

so anyway, all ranting aside, i looked around and found detroit turbo with their gilbert shaft. that i'll be buying in the morning. also saving me from commiting a MULTIPLE HOMICIDE on a GM dealership.

thank you detroit turbo

Re: so i'm driving down the street...

hahaha they dont call it a "stealership" for nothing... they want 759 for a front axle!

oh! and one of my favorites... those little clips that hold the screws in place for the panels under the dash and to hold the screws in place for the front bumper lenses... try $4.27 a piece. you know those cheap ass imitation nuts they use to hold the grille letters on? 4.63 a piece.

hahaha and i bet the 2300 they quoted you didnt even include labor. which is probably another 250 to R&R 8 bolts. which is pretty tough especially when you have a lift:roll:

anytime you go to the dealer to get a syty specific part, get ready to play the role of ned beatty in deliverance!

I hope that you folks who are "diehard OEM types" are taking notes. This ranks up there with the $1300 syclone fuel pump swap earlier this summer...

$2300 for a POS propshaft? That is unfreakingbelievable.

Kinda reminds me of the time a stealership retard told me that my 94 L35 Sonoma's aftermarket OBDI chip was no good because it wasn't burned in :dunno:
I told him he was ignorant as ****,then laid two nice black streaks all the way through the service department.

i'd don't feel too bad now, i was only quoted 2100 dollars for. of course my brother was working for gmc at the time and he said he could get it for me for 1100 if i really wanted it.

Because all the folks who work at dealerships conspire and make up the prices

Dude, I have to pay for parts just like you, complain to GM themselves if you don't like something.

Tony(I'm the guy who sets incredibly high prices on all 13 year old discontinued parts)

You want to think yourself lucky that you had a propshaft to start with. When I imported my Typhoon from Japan it did not have one. I had the same problem trying to find one at the right price being in the UK. I found a company called Dynotech toll free 1800 633 5559 - and the propshafts costs are $479 this includes shipping and they also do an extra duty for the same cost. Good luck on fitting it as they are difficult.

I was quoted the same price of $2300 when I went to the dealer to. I don't even look at that place when I drive by now.

Re: so i'm driving down the street...

So my question is why even go back to a 100% stock front propshaft? When a Gilbert cost's what.. $400? And will never break.. The only reason why I could think to go back to stock would be to do a restor project, or to replace a bad one on a super low miled truck..

Unless you have a propshaft loop, I wouldn't be waiting for it to break, because it usually take something else with it. It can crack the tranny case or even rip the transmission cable out bending and twisting the cab shifter assembly, so that both need replacing.

Re: so i'm driving down the street...

Good point, time to look into a loop or a Gilbert before it happens. It would be just my luck to have it go while going 70+ on the freeway:tdown:

Yup, get a safety loop from Phil Chivers on Ron Gregory's website (syty fuel pump guy) just to play it safe if you are still running a stock propshaft. I had one until I got my Gilbert back in 2001.

Re: so i'm driving down the street...

Are Phils loops a PITA to install (have to take out propshaft)? I read that they came with directions, so we should be set if we get one.
