Spooky issue (coulda been worse I guess)

Im having a strange problem with the tans. I was on my way home form dinner and it kept feeling weird. It felt like I would give it gas and it didnt wnat to go anywhere. Then the trans temps started to sky rocket. So as Im getting closer to hom, right down hte street, the tans just neutrals and I coast into a parking lot. So I check to see if has fluid, it does and I tell the wife Im going to to walk home and get my work truck. Well, I put it in reverse and it worked. So I siad, were driving home backwards  I start to go and hten try drive and it works again like nothing ever happened. I drove hom and got it into the garage half way. I checked the fluid again and it was low. So I went to pull it in for the night nad reverse didnt work? Then I put it into neutral and it was in drive. I put it in drive and, it was in drive. So I put it back to park and it was in park. Put it in reverse and it was in drive. What in the hell is going here?

Heres the pics of what I found:

These are the over-run clutches. Dont ask me what they do exactly but I do know they participate in moving forward  They are bowed outwards, probably due to my violent 1-2 shift, will be changing that.

There is an E in home

I second the above, I'd pull the valve body

Clogged filter? Since I know squat about automatic transmissions I just thought I throw that out there.

Re: Spooky issue

if you haven't thought of it already, I would get underneath and check the shiter linkage and related mounts, maybe have someone "click" though the positions (engine off, brake set, proper lifting and jacks, usual legal stuff) and see what is happening at the trans.

IT'S JUST FRIKING HAUNTED....... CALL A PREIST.... QUICK!

Sorry man could't resist since you said spooky. You say it got hot... did it cook the fluid?
Time for a pull down inspection (I know you didn't want to hear that) cause it sounds like it may leave walking just any time.

I'd take two minutes first and check out the shifter linkage... Mine would do something similar when my gilbert propshaft would make contact with the linkage.

When my rear panetary broke i had no forward gears (just whining), only reverse. Had to back up the the shoulder and wait for tow-truck.
What intermediate servo do you have?

Re: Spooky issue

I use the stock servo. It has drive. It had reverse. now it only has drive when in reverse. Soon as I get my wifes car fixed and out of the garage I am going to drop the pan and look for a mangled linkage thingy mabober that the TV cbale hooks to. I hope thats it cause i have two more of them. If not, I guess Im pulling the trans out. Dont want to but thats what will have to happen.

Damn, I pulled the Vb and everything looks great, except the fluid ofcourse. Guess Im pulling the trans. Wish I had the Money for hte 4L80.

Far from unfortunately. These clutches in the pics are the two in the bottom of the input drum and htey are OD. Forward and rear sprag look brand new. I jsut got new clutches and stacked them all and clearance is perfect. Thinking back on my build last year, I accidentally knocked all the VB valves and spring on the floor and re-assembled with pics. I know thats retarded but it was ll I had. I compared it with my NOS VB and there is one vlave in particular that has waaay different spring tension. This is the one I had trouble with last time, I put a softer pring in and I wonder if it made my OD act funny. It s always gotten hot on the highway, maybe the clutches werent fully engaing or didnt have enough pressure behind them from this. It was the 3/4 valve I believe, which would say a lot. Im going to go pput it al back together stick it back i n and see what happens. I checked all the seals and planets and everythign else nad it all looks brand new nad there is no play in anything.

Reverse drum and low are engaged to make you go backward.

So you've lost the overrun and the reverse clutches. Reverse clutches are usually due to a faulty pressure regulator lineup or the bore in the pump is bad and makes them burn up. Less often, the seals harden up from being overheated and leak (the two seals on the stator for reverse). Stick your finger in the reverse drum where these rings ride and make sure it's not scored. Also. Feel down inside the INSIDE diameter of the stator. See if it's egged out from the input shaft rubbing on it. If it is, you need to just replace the whole pump. Your valvebody is fine or it never would've worked. Make sure the valves move freely so you don't have such a violent 1-2 shift. Don't block the 2nd accumulator either. That will really screw up a 700.

Wow, George was right on the $. Glad I went and looked before I put it back together, not only is hte inside of the stator scored, but the input shaft is too. Do i need a new shaft then as well ?

Re: Spooky issue (coulda been worse I guess)

I would do a whole new pump and input drum.

There was probably something internally wrong with the torque converter. Like an internal component imbalanced. At least a converter that was in front of it at one time. Your CURRENT converter may be fine (still get it rebuilt). At some point though, there was a converter that was fubar and it took the input shaft of the input drum and worked it around in the stator and egged it out. Now the overrun clutches, the forwards and the 3-4s have been crossleaking.
BTW, glad I was able to help. Many of the "mysterious" burnups are usually caused by silly little stuff like this.

Found some more damage. When this all started, I was doing a launch with a friend in the truck .When it ook off, it was very slow and had htat binding up feeling, like hte brake was applied. Well, last night I noticed that hte input shaft has a big crack in it. Could TC failure cause this or is it more likely this crack caused everything else?

The input shaft is a known weakness.

The shaft has many holes drilled in it. Your driving behavior is taxing the trans. Your either gonna have to lay off or get one of these if you plan on staying with the 700r4.

Your kinda stuck. Your gonna have to try to save the 700r4 or step up to the 80e if you want to keep up your current driving characteristic. I suggest getting this and seeing if you can get a late model drum from dacco or transtar, send the drum to lingenfelter and have them press the shaft out and replace it with this one(late model has improved aluminum casting process). You can also have Chuck at FLP do it and then he can sleeve it also if you want him to do it. Before you choke at the price, remember, you want to play, you have to pay. As far as what came first, the chicken or the egg. My bet is the stator support was fubar and let the shaft move more than it was supposed to and took it out. Because of all the holes, it just couldn't take it. If your doing this, you should go ahead and contact FLP and get their output shaft. The output shaft is also available from PATC. These guys sell in high enough quantity that they can make them available. The center of all this beating is the sprag. I do the reinforced sprag that has held up into the 9s. I've done 700s with all of these components because owners are like you and want to have tons of fun. Unfortunately, the price has hit the cost of an 80e by the time you do all of this and I don't believe it's practical to keep dumping money into the 700. If your willing to drive normally and do just a launch every now and then, then just get some stock reman parts and get it back on the road.
Here's the billet output shaft 4x4 style with the governor grooves:

So yeah, over $1050 for just these two parts. But as much racing as you do, your gonna have to put up.

You know to be perfectly honest, I dont think the 700, for me anyway, is really worth the kind of money it takes to "bullet proof". The 4L80 is definately in my future, I just dont know when. Until I can get my business to really take off Ill be constantly fixing this POS I guess. I have some spare inputs laying around so I can get it back together. I also have 2 spare pumps. They are just missing valves but I should be able to work that out. Maybe this summer Ill start piece mealing my 4L80 together.
