Starter Click, Click, Click, (insert vulgar Lang.) Start

Alright I think I know what to do but it doesn't start. This is what I did. I removed my wheelwell, Took a while to find my purple wire (as mine was brown, Burnt). I pulled the wire out enough to find the purple. cut it and spliced another wire on and re connected to starter. I still have the problem. I was thinking that I could run a new wire from the post into the cab and run a wire from there to the battery with a push button switch. Would this work? Thank-you.

the purple wire isn't always the problem. charge the battery and if that doesn't work it may be the starter.

Thanks-guys, I am going to try replacing the wire one more time. I have a better wire for the job now. Also I have a new Battery, and the starter was put in last fall, before it was put away for the winter. I hope this will work. I dont have time to order any parts right now. Track this Sat. I don't want to hold up the line because it won't start I'll look like a fool, maybe a bigger fool. Soon to come new Sig.

I have to agree, i thought it was the purple wire on my truck too. But it never fails to start with my remote starter that is connected to the wires at the center consol park/neutral switch. I can start with my remote always but with the key i get click, click allot of times. Haven't figure that one out yet

mine just started the intermittent click click thing, too.
i found if i just keep flicking it on/start/on/start w/in a few tries it'll crank.
my prob started when an alarm went in - relation? maybe.
my experience would tell me i have a sticky solenoid.

Mine has been doing that click click thing for a couple of months, it never fails to start, it just takes a couple of clicks before it starts
keep the posts coming on possible solutions

A F**d remote starter relay (any auto parts store - about $15.00) and the standard late model S-10 starter relay heat shield ($5.00 at you local GM dealer). A jumper to your old purple wire terminal on the stock solenoid from the main power lead from the new solenoid.

If you existing starter solenoid is toast, you may need to get a replacement or rebuild the solenoid.

Do these things and you will not have to think about it again. It's been 2 years since I did mine and I have not had one problem.

Sometimes I have the clicks, other times nothing at all for a few tries.

Mine will even act up on occasion when it's completely cold, do you think this starter relay fix would help in this situation?

Or is my starter actually going out ?

I starting getting the starter click for a couple of weeks and replaced the purple wire (thanks Brian W.) for the photo and it starts right up and hasn't clicked once. The Hot Shot worked for 4-years when I first got the clicking and just ran the new 10g wire to the Hot Shot so I'm still using it with thew new wire.

I believe sometimes the starter selonoid will get so pitted that it just needs to be replaced or if you want to mess around with rebuilding it if none of the above works for you.

My does “click click” also, but some times it is in morning (cold) some times when hot. It was over 100 F for last couple of days, but truck was starting OK. Go figure. By the way it is never too cold in the morning (CA).
On another hand, when I was Mercedes technician (many, many moons ago) I’ve seeing bed ignition tumbler quiet often. Electrical contacts will get burned out (just like bad relay) and it will take few clicks to vehicle started. Solution is to replace tumbler.
I think if you have click-no start: wire, no click (in starter): bad ignition tumbler. :-?
