What should the boost gauge be reading at idle for vacum on after market gauge? I set my timing based on the vacum as i was told by a mechanic if you don't have a timing light to set the vacum at it's highest level with a steady reading. I did that which i turned the dist. left about a 1/4 of a turn and it ran fine but when i hooked up the tan wire it now runs shitty and dies?

That sounds like a pretty shitty way to set it, especially on these picky things. Maybe if you were stuck in the middle of nowhere without a timing light or something...

I believe you should back timing off about 2" from the most vacuum, from the old rule of thumb. This may be a lot closer if you do it while the tan wire is connected, but you still need to have it done with a timing light. You may be able to rent a light at Autozone or other parts store. The rental is often free, but you have to leave a deposit.

Well mine sits at 10 and will go to 12 every once in a while. I think the dist. is gonna have to be pulled and installed the way it is suppose to be with the proper firing order. Mine is off by one plug and the flat side faces 1 o'clock instead of 11 like every one elses. I think it will make a world of difference. Well if that doesn't get done before it is sold I will tello the buyer what needs to be done. Thanks guys for answering my post. Also Thanks for no flames on my 1950's way of setting the timing.
