SyTyUK - March Update

Quickstop [UK]

Combating adversyty.
Hi everyone, here is another update after a couple of SyTy weekends.

Mark Kelly hosted me, Brett (Backzilla) and Marcus (MDH) at his house in Milton Keynes on the 4th of March, a week last Sunday. Hats off to Marcus who drove 2.5 hours from Bristol but it was equally impressive to see Brett at such short notice. I made the trek up from London and was glad to meet another two very friendly owners.

The plan was to do the following to Mark’s truck:

We had a PLX daisy chain (wideband O2 and boost sensor) to install, the Moates tuning equipment and a general once over to complete. Despite having almost the exact same truck, I am always keen to see a white/grey Saudi Typhoon so I was very happy to see that Mark has a really good looking truck. There are some issues that we addressed and he has some plans but it was fun to get my fingers and hands dirty again.

Brett’s truck was also very impressive. It’s in great condition and mostly stock which was great to behold. He was kind enough to take us for a spin and it pulled hard and ran fast. As he was grateful for the help I and others have provided, he very kindly donated his broken 700-R4 to Marcus and I for dissection and a rebuild at some stage.

We had hoped to install the gauges on Brett’s truck as well (Autometer Phantom boost gauge and possibly a trans temp gauge). These are already in the truck but haven’t been connected due to the winter, the weather and the fittings. We had almost everything we needed but one fitting to the boost gauge was absent. Unfortunately, because the weather was so atrocious (it was snowing at one point), we were forced to stay in the relative comfort of Mark’s garage and work on his Typhoon so Brett lucked out. However, a continuous stream of tea, bacon butties, scotch eggs and pork pies saw us well fed and hosted and the banter kept up all day. I hope we can install Brett’s gauges at the AACI event in June, if not before.

Unfortunately the day didn’t quite go as expected. Marcus managed to quickly change over the steering shaft to the improved Cherokee version and we got the PLX oxygen sensor and O2 feeds through the firewall quite easily. Progress stopped around about this point due to the odd item but ultimately due to a problem with the PLX gauge setup. AFR worked ok but the boost/vac module wouldn’t work so we couldn’t reassemble the rest of the cluster and the ECM. We had to give up on the PLX as Marcus had to go home and so did Brett.

The Moates hardware went in nicely and the truck started but for now, it still has no 3 bar MAP sensor for the new codes/tune Mark needs a 3 bar MAP sensor and a few other little items for a tune up so I’m hoping we can help him along in the coming months. Thankfully, this weekend, Mark managed to get the wires together correctly and he now has a functioning wideband O2 and multi sensor gauge for boost as well. The next planned installation is an oil gauge. . I have exams to concentrate on in the coming weeks so the next Milton Keynes event will be in April although I’m helping Marcus in 2 weeks time we when we planned to have a trip to Smeatharpe in Devon.

Note that I say – “we planned”. On the way back from Bristol, Marcus remarked on the poor fuel mileage that he was getting and decided to do some investigations once home. A blackened plug on #1 was suspicious so to rule out a sticking injector, Marcus and I had a go at some home injector cleaning this weekend gone. It appeared as though the injector was working well so we turned our attention to the ignition. An electric shock to my hand confirmed it was also working well and we could see the plug sparking away. Both plug 1 and 3 were black so I suggested we try something different.

Having checked fuel and spark, I suggested we check compression and after a quick trip to Halfords for a compression tester, lo and behold, there was no compression on #1. #3 also had no compression so after adjusting all the valves and comparing with # 2 and #6, we have concluded that the head gasket needs to come off on the driver side. #5 had about 120 psi which is in the correct range. We did a fair bit of head scratching and considering the plan was to take it to Smeatharpe in 2 weeks time, it’s more than a little disappointing. We won’t know what’s going on until the heads have been pulled but we will of course update you all on what we find. With any luck, we’ll get some good weather on the 23/24th and get the truck up and running properly.

I hope you’re all well and have had some time to show your truck some attention in preparation for the summer. I’m sure Marcus, Brett and Mark will all chime in regarding the previous weekends but if anyone is in Bristol on the 23rd/24 th March or Truro, Corwall between 10-12 April, it would be good to meet you!

AACI, Billing Aquadrome, Northampton, is still on for June 16th and 17th, 2012. Hope you can make it!
