Taking my TY into the 12's

Hey guys, I have been reading these forms for awhile and searching to the best of the search functions ability but always come across the same threads. But have not been able to find a good thread of somebody with a TY that has gone down the road that I starting at.

I purchased my truck a little while back and dont have plans on going to nuts with it yet. However, I am looking for how to take my TY from the high 13's to high 12's. Its fastest was a 13.7

It already has

Mallory wires
NGK plugs
AFPR
Walbro 255
Catback exhuast (ATR)
Kenne Bell Intake
Johnson IC pump hot wire
IC scoop
Boost gauge
Trans Temp

Not installed,
160 stat

I have the 3bar and will be getting a STG ultimate for the time being until time allows me to start tuning myself. I know that some people will say just to get the tuning equipment and you will have more success that way for now. However, i would rather get something that is going to let me just plug and play for right now until i am sure i have the time to mess with the tuning of the truck myself.

Thanks Guys

Jeremy

Tuning is plug and play. Well, for the most part, and will net you more than any Ultimate ship ever will, unless it was made for YOUR truck. Get some meth on your list, trust me.

Even if you don't get into chip burning, you will find most of the times, that monitoring your via a scan tool will produce worthwhile improvements. Most of the fast SyTy (for the mods) aren't fast by throw adding plugging part and how it work via luck. I know of quite a few Ty with ultiamte chip that ran low 13's with your mods. The key is make sure it has a clean scan tool run and add boost as the engine will take it.

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

I was running low 13's with the below mods until I got a wide band o2 sensor. Then promptly jumped into the 12's. (With a little help from the folks here! You know who you are.) Anyway, as mentioned, get a scan tool, you're shooting in the dark otherwise, and a wide band. With those 2 items you should do well without destroying the motor.

I am running an Ultimate chip & run low 12's.
I also ran a Pitbull chip & ran low 12's.
IMO, chipping is a better way to get all you can get out of it.,,,but,,,,,, there are many trucks that run 12's w/just minimal bolt ons & standard ultimate chips. :2cents:

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

Thanks guys,

I understand that i can get better results from tuning. But right now i just dont want to dive to far into it and have a truck that can be driven because of the tuning that is being done. I was looking at the wideband as well because as you all mentioned, you really dont know whats going on A/F wise without it.

When you guys talk about scan tool, are you talking able the adl cable with a software that will monitors it. The truck has that already installed and I have the labtop for the monitoring but havent had much luck getting it to sync to the truck. Probably user error and can not remember right now what software it was. I just want to let you guys know before you try to offer assistance with the adl and scan software that i am in Afghanistan right now and wont see the truck for another 2 weeks or so.

So if you can specify what kinda of scan tool and what is needed that would be great.

I like meth and the results that can be achieved from it, however I believe i need to be in the tuning stage to get full use out of it. Correct me if im wrong.

If i could run meth or alky with an ultimate and wideband and scan tool, without having huge fueling hurdles to jump. How would I and is razors kit the best one for out trucks? The reason i ask is because i am a STI guy as well and there seems to be a ton of Meth/alky kits in the import world that look a lot nicer from manufactures such as Aquamist and Cooling mist (not trying to say razors kits are not) with better pump and bottle setups. So what is your guys opinions?

thanks for the replies

DataMaster is great, TunerPro as well all used on your laptop.
Both are great tools..

Most used software to monitor/data log your truck are either datamaster (www.ttspowersystems.com) or tunerpro rt (http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadApp.htm)

Alky has quickly become a huge bang-for-the-buck on forced induction vehicles and is really coming around to being a must have mod for these trucks.. there's no doubt it'll put you into the 12's or more with your mods and a close eye on afr's and kr so i'd concider it and yes you will need to tune your setup to get the most out of it but that goes the same with any bolt-on or mod you got or add right?

As far as whats the better alky injection kit goes, pretty much all of them now a days use the meth friendly seals in there pumps and all run the same shurflow pumps. The alkycontrol.com kits are highly spoken for on this site as well as turbobuicks.com because of the support and help the owner Julio lends and because his kits come with braided -an lines where as everyone else's come with standard meth/alky safe plastic tubing.. there's nothing wrong the non -an lines just use some sense when routing them away from extreme heat areas etc or wrap them in those areas if need be and you'll do
fine in my opinion

Do a search and you'll see that you have to adjust the aldl link timing setting with in datamaster to connect to your ecm.. it'll end being somewhere between 190 and 205 and datamaster's readme file suggest starting at 196 I believe and working your way up or down from there.. it's a pain in the azz but once you get it your good.

*edit*

actually here's exactly what you want from Tooky's new website which I highly suggest reading when you get time

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

Glad you like the website :)

I don't know how much you read of it but don't overlook the fact that taking a Ty into the 12s with a stock turbo will require high octane fuel (race gas or alky) and a chip. And you are right it's going to be tough to get good results on alcohol with a standard (non-alky) Ultimate chip. The way I did it involves lowering the fuel pressure which helps keep it from going too rich at WOT but causes worse driveability around town.

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

Ok well i made it back to the states and hooked up the computer to the truck to make sure its doing what its supposed to.

I figured out datamaster thanks guys.

Anyways i have a file that i wanna email to some of you guys to tell me what you see. The knock is freaking incredible. I dont know if it is true or not because it started out when i first hooked it up to the truck with 736 and ended up at like 2495. But timing was only pulled like 3 to 5 degrees at most. So i dont know if its false or not.

So who wants to look at my DM file and tell me what they think

Thanks guys

After looking at tookys website again, From what I can tell is that the truck is runny good because the spark retard is not that high. I believe that it did get to 5.9 in the log but but the engine temp was 192.4 or somewhere around there. So I will put the 160 stat in it and see if that helps.

I have the Ultamite (not installed) and WB is on its way (PLX). If anybody has anymore info on hooking up the WB to f14 please let me know.

Ill look at it if you wnat. 3-5* isnt horrible or the end of the world but you wnat to get it down to 0 if possible. Im sure its not false. You can email it to me at htlandscape@yahoo.com. Im sure others will want to see it too.

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

I looked at your Datamaster file and I didn't see much out of the ordinary. I assume that is stock chip, The 3-5 degree isn't horrendous, but it could be better.

I am don't think your Johnson IC pump is hotwire properly or the hoses might be kinked or have air pockets in them. I would also add the the thermostat.

It looks like you have done most of the tune up. For things to looks at, you might want to check your timing or use GM top end cleaner to remove any carbon deposits. By all mean if you have't replaced the vacuum lines I would do that as well. (it might not make a difference, but you don't want to ruin your motor of a few lines)

If you want to see if its real knock, you can always install some Race Gas or Xylene, you will need to add enough octane so the change noticablebly.

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

I agree, your IAT's kind of suck actually. No matter what I ever did with the stock W2A set up, I could never get decent IAt's. Some have better luck though. One thing I also noticed, you only go WOT for like two seconds. You dont the most accurate data from that. At one point you are at 86%INJDC, while that is not bad, for some trucks it is the begining of the end of the stock injectors, w/o meth anyway. My truck always knocked past 90%. I have seen some trucks that run 110% and have 0 knock. You may be there. What is your FP set at? I believe you can make minor adjusments here and get rid of the knock altogether. It would be interesting to see a good solid run with 100%TPS.

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

I am going to check the pump and the lines to determine if there is anything bad going on. Ill also datalog some better runs. I didnt have the room to really get some good long runs in so i will do it later. I have my FP set at 45 so i might have to up it to 50 to get a little more out of them.

I did notice the TPS was not at 100 when i did floor so maybe the floor mat is in the way(or just not man enought to go to the floor :rotf: ).

I tell you what though, no matter what you try to do to this truck its all a pain in the space. I find that you might as well have to complete sears specialty tools to get into every place this truck has bolts at.

Thanks again guys.. I get the WB on monday and have to figure out where i am going to mount it. In digs write up it told me what i needed to know but, from what i can tell i need to have a tuning setup in order for the computer to be able to use the WB for datalogging. Is the right or will it still work with the Ultimate for now?

Re: Taking my TY into the 12's

Do some more searching, the info is out there. Your chip has to be "patched" with the WBO2 Patch (from Dig's site) to match whatever make/model Wideband kit you're running. You can hook it up ahead of time to the F14 pin so you're ready when you get the patched chip.

In the meantime you can glance at the Wideband display out of the corner of your eye, that is still pretty useful (until you can get all the pieces of the WB datalogging puzzle in place.)
