Temp gauge install for tranny

Ive had a trans temp gauge in the sy for awhile, but I used to use it for my IC temps. Now that I went A2A, id like to finally use the sender for trans temp.


Question is, where would the best place to mount it be? I think the pan is the easiest by welding a bung into it so I can screw in the sender, but have heard that this is bad since temp readings may be inaccurate due to the pan heating up as well. How much would this really be affected....wouldnt the pan basically be the same temp as what the fluid inside be? If its a few degrees off, thats not a big deal, IMHO. Once you start going 10+* off, then its a big deal.

My trans lines are braided going up to a hayden cooler mounted behind the grille (exactly like the aux IC mod, remember i have A2A now) with AN fittings on each end. Ive also heard that you can put a T off one of the lines and put the temp sender there. Id rather not cut into the braided line if I dont have to.


Im going the direction of putting it into the pan. Any advice or info on what others have done is mucho appreciated.

im waiting for any easy way to intall my temp gauge also. I read some where that u can buy a kit from summit that mounts under your battery that has an aux filter and a spot for a temp sending unit. Ive lost that article and ive been looking for some more feed back if people have done that before.

Actually, I just mounted my remote trans filter with the sender for the trans temp gauge. I mounted it right under the battery. I mounted the summit trans filter mount right to the rad support so that I can still remove the inner fender without unbolting the trans filter mount. I can get pics if need be.

Ive never considered doing an aux filter, does it really make that much of a difference?

The transmission cooling in the radiator of a typhoon that I helped with a trans swap last year was so plugged up with shrapnel and gunk that the owner wasn't able to use it anymore. A remote filter placed upstream from it would have prevented that. He ended up just using a big auxiliary transmission cooler and blocked off the one in the radiator. In my two previous transmission failures, I have never had anything other than ATF come out when I have flushed my lines and coolers. A spin on filter will trap particles that are to small for the one in the pan to trap also. Which makes it necessary to change more often than you would the in pan one. Because as it gets loaded up, the flow through the filter will decrease. Not a problem changing it if you put it somewhere easy to get to...

I will be working on my truck tomorrow.. I will take some pics. I used the hardware that came with the aux trans cooler and remote trans filter mount. Its a faily easy install.. just time consuming.

Even though I dont have a trans temp, I would think that the closer the better, I mean really, the point of taking it to the front of the vehicle is to cool it off. I would think that you would want to know what temp the TRANS is not the cooler lines. IMO this would be a great way to fool yourself into thinking that is cooler than it actually is. If it were me, Ild go with the bung on the pan. Even it says its a few degrees hotter than it really is, I would see that as a precaution so to speak. Not to mention , it would probably make a good drain plug. :2cents:

I was under the asumption that the flow of the fluid is like this. Goes thru the trans , then it goes out the transmission lines to the remote trans filter (which has the sensor), then to my aux cooler, then to the factory cooler then back to the trans which goes through the pan and filter before the fluid goes back into the transmission. If I am right then the fluid would be hotter as it leaves the transmission rather then in the pan before it goes in. (1 line has to be the hot feed, right from the transmission) yes it may cool down a little bit as it runs to the remote trans filter but I would think its not too much since the short distance. Though I could be wrong and I hope that someone with more knowledge about this could chime in.

Well, Im certainly not an authority but it was just my thought on the matter. Your coolant temp sensor isnt at the radiator its at the block you know. Ive touiched the trans pan when its hot and believe me, its HOT. Anyway, :2cents:

(not flaming you, and by far I'm not an authority at this either, just some knowledge that I have learned along the way, which I am always open to learn more from knowledgeable people :D )
Like the coolant sensor the best spot for the trans sensor would be right on the transmission but for me to mount the sensor there is pain in the a$$. Hooking it up down the line a little makes it more practical and still give me relitively close readings.( I know its not exact but should be fairly close) I know that the pan gets hot but is coolant cold then it leaves the rad? nope, its still hot but it is cooler compared to the inlet hose of the rad. (not trying to be a smart ass) :tup: :2cents:

Ok, my :2cents: . I have just read this but am getting ready to put mine on as well. The temp sensor in the pan is cooler reading that the one you will get if you put it on the output line of the trans. Also there is a bung in the side of the trany that you can use. (dont know which side its on but i think the driver side.) But this location is also not as hot as the putting the sender on the output line. I will be putting on a remote filter be for the cooler, and i will put the sender with the filter, or the bung thats already in the trany.

I will be disconecting the stock cooler, and just running a aux with fan. might put it up front might put it under the bed. People that have mounted the aux coolers under the bed have noticed hotter temps due to the exhaust being right there, but solved this by just making a heat sheild and adding a fan.

Practical- any location would due fine im sure, you will see the temps start to increase at any location.

Here are the pictures for you. I had to mount it sideways so that I can remount the battery tray. It fits very nicely. As for the vacuum ball, as of right now, I removed it and have it pluged but I am looking into seeing if a vacuum ball from a 96up Jimmy/blazer will work (much smaller).

Nice setup, looks like a carbon copy of mine except that I have my cooler and filter mounted vice versa... However, I would recommend putting a grommet in all the round holes and use wire loom around the edges in everything else. That way, road vibration won't wear a hole in the line and starve your transmission of ATF.

Looking at Rob's picture, do U see where those 2 rubber hoses go thru from the front - in that little cubbyhole down low (Pass side) between the front and back sheet metal of the radiator support ?

I put my AM Trans T block in there and bolted it to the sheet metal. I think I have a pic somewhere. I thought I was F'ing clever, because I had absolutely no F'ing room anywhere else on that side. I pushed my batt down in the hole, had the thicker Griffin Rad, the Cold Air there, a Cobra elbow, etc., etc.

I don't have any summer miles yet, but I haven't seen my Trans T go over 140 F.

I just bought a trans temp gauge and I was just wondering what line to tee into bottom or top line from tranny that goes to the rad.

i'd say it's very important that the sender goes on the output of the trans, right were the fluid will be the hottest. I have 3 senders-1 in my TCI pan,1in an autometer trans temp. manifold(the only way to go)8" from the trans on the output line and 1 coming out of my second trans cooler before going back into the trans. The first sender in the pan seems to be pretty much useless to me b/c my trans cooling setup works so good that I routinely see output temps of 180F around town in the summer w/o either cooler fan on, but can switch to the pan sender(toggle switch)and see the fluid at barely over 100/110F. B/c I have so much trans fluid in the system and the oil temp drops between 50-90F through the coolers/etc; with only a pan sender I could be seeing 130F in the pan but have fluid coming out of the TC at 210F +. The third sender is just to keep an eye on my cooler efficiency.

My trans setup:
all -6an hoses/ends-out of trans to sender in manifold,there to spin on filter(NO SENDER HERE-check for oil restriction w/sender installed),then into B&M evap. trans fluid res.,through bed floor to twin dual pass coolers in series w/12" SPAL fans on each then to sending unit leaving last cooler then back under truck into trans.
