Testing the viscious clutch

Yes I searched. When I turn very tight at slow speed in a parking lot the drivetrain seems to get a lot of resistance in it. It isn't hopping or doing anything weird like that which I read as symptoms. If you turn tight into say a parking space the truck will almost come to a stop because of the friction in the drive train at full lock.

It drives great around town. The last time I had it on the highway it did have a high speed vibration to it. I still have to get the balance on the new tires re checked. The vibration could very well just be the tires because it showed up right after I replaced the front tires.

I'm just curious if this resistance on tight turns is normal or if this is a sign of a possible issue with the VC.

I believe it is the VC. Sounds like the same as mine. Have you checked the fluid in the TC? If it's greyish, it's the VC. How do the outside edges of your front tires look? Mine burnt up a set of fronts quickly. I'll be replacing it this winter when I get my garage.

Re: Testing the viscious clutch

I just got back from a weekend camping trip with the Ty. I had it out on the highway to and from the camp ground. No vibration in the wheel or dashboard this time.

The tires only have a few hundred miles on them and they look fine.

When I serviced the T case a while ago I didn't notice any unusual color to the fluid coming out. But I didn't really look at it real close after it was in the pan.

So I'm not going to worry about the VC for now.

The front diff has always had a noise to it on decelearation. I never knew if it was normal or not. The front diff seemed to have some noise to it out on the highway during this trip. I think that is what is getting looked at next.

Jay, what symptoms do you have exactly? Just the tight feeling when turning very sharp? Or is there more?

Re: Testing the viscious clutch

Both my Sy and Ty have some "resistance" at low speed doing tight turns, I attribute it to wide front tires and the AWD. If it starts jumping on turns, then I'd be alarmed. Does the vibration occur at a certain speed range? Every first gen S-truck I've driven has a vibration between 65-75, any others have the same issue. From what I gather, its just the harmonic range of the vehicle.

Re: Testing the viscious clutch

The vibrations on the last trip occurred from about 65 and up. They kind of came and went in waves. When the vibration was there it would shaked the steering wheel and dash board.

This trip I had it cruising as high as 80 and no vibrations.

I like the fact that the vibration thing is gone. I don't like that fact that I don't know why. lol
