Torque converter causing vibration

Has anyone ever had a torque converter case a motor vibration? In neutral/park as well? But the converter seemed to work just fine while driving? Not a cracked flex plate or loose bolts in the flex plate or converter, but the actual converter itself causing an imbalance/vibration?

Re: Torque converter causing vibration

I never had that problem w/ the torque converter. It really sounds like a bad transmission mount.

i would check you plugs to see if all the cilinders are firing

Raist103 has had this problem, I drove the truck once with the bad converter and it was definately a weird experience. His conveter was NOT fine while driving, but I dont recall what happened while in neutral or park. If I see him online Ill direct him to this thread.

Re: Torque converter causing vibration

btw it only takes about 20 min. to unbolt the TC from the engine.and see if it goes away

New harmonic balancer. Compression test looks good. Plugs all look good with no trace of oil. I did unbolt the converter and ran the motor but then found a bad plug wire which kind of negates the test. Replaced plug wire. Probably need to do that test again. Didn't think the check the tranny mount.....it's a poly and was put in when I did the solid motor mounts.

I'm just curious if this scenario could even happen. A bad converter that works just fine while driving.

yes it can and does happen over rev a converter it will baloon, to many boost launches its alot more common than you think

I guess mabey I need to unbolt that converter again while I'm under there taking underbody shots for you.

I just put another set of new plugs and wires on it last night. I have a lifetime warranty on the wires so I thought I would use that to replace them. With the one burnt one and another that didn't seem to click onto one of the distributor cap terminals. New coil went in last week. Hopefully that will rule out the ignition system.

Re: Torque converter causing vibration

remove front propshaft and take it for a drive, also cheack the rear driveshaft to see if the weight came off have the tires rebalanced

All that crossed my mind. But this also occurs in neutral and only when the motor is up around 4K rpm. So I think that rules out all of those scenarios. Right?

Re: Torque converter causing vibration

In another thread, I was talking about the various noises I can hear coming from the truck when it is running. I wrote:
"The only noises from the motor are at first start up there is an unusual noise. Not a knock or a banging. I'm not sure how to describe it though. I have found the noise described as piston slap in several threads. It goes away rather quickly once the motor starts to warm up. Once warm, the only noise I hear is a slight lifter tick as far as I can tell and of course the injectors. No noises that others have reported along the lines of a bent rod. I had rod knock with the last vehicle I had and there is nothing remotely going on that resembled that noise. "

And I wrote this:
"I just got out from under the truck while it was running. That piston slap noise and a noticeable tick both seem to be coming from the torque converter or the transmission itself up by the pump."

Well, I unbolted the TQ again and started the motor. That piston slap noise is gone. I can still hear a tapping of sorts from the back of the motor....still sounds like lifter noise but I don't really know.

That motor sure doesn't like the change of not having the converter on. Once the motor got with the program I reved it some. I could feel a vibration, though much much slighter, at 1500. It mainly only shook the steering wheel a little. The vibration up at 4K seemed to be gone as far as I can tell.

Do I have probably cause to go through the job of replacing the converter? Or is there more testing to do before making that commitment?

Re: Torque converter causing vibration

I know. I'm sorry to be a flake. If I could ever get this thing sorted out I'd love the hell out of this truck. Well, honestly I have a sour taste in my mouth after having to pull the heads three times. There was a point in time that I insisted that it was the weekend family truckster. But the recent fustration level has been killing me. One minute I'm ready to set it on fire then the next minute I ready to pull the motor, tranny, and t case and go through everything...time and cost be damned. With it running correctly I can get a trade for double what my dump it price is if I decided to go that way.

If you PM me your e-mail I can send high resolution pics. If that info is in the FS thread, disregard.

Compression test results:

1) 155
2) 150
3) 160
4) 145
5) 155
6) 150

Oh. And the transmission mount is tight.

Re: Torque converter causing vibration

Exactly. More accurately if I keep the rpm's down to normal driving you never know there is an issue. It's only up around 4K that hell starts breaking loose. The 4K vibration isn't horrible in neutral but is very significant under load.

Plug gap is at .28 if that's the next question in mind. :) Every component of the ignition is new. I arrive at no other explanation than a mechanical imbalance.......that only shows itself at 4K and a little bit at 1500 if the two are the same issue. I've never had an issue like this.

Re: Torque converter causing vibration

Next question. Does the torque converter normally have balance weghts attached to the outside? Like the balance weights on a drive shaft?
