Trans Question Any Help

I searched!!!! But did not get answer i need.

My original transmission has about 6,000 miles on a rebuild. The shop that was going to tune the truck for me did a cooler install and broke the outlet off the top of the trans. I got the truck back leaking fluid everywhere because the piece is broken off. They said it cannot be welded so I am screwed.

They supplied me with a 1991 AWD Astro transmission that has 80k on it. 700 r4.

So i spoke to my local transmission shop and they told me for $150 they would take the guts out of one and place it in the new one.

But then I got thinking.

#1. Am I able to use this transmission they supplied me??

#2. Can they really just move the guts from one to the other??

#3. would it be possible to install the Astro trans now to get it running, and then when it snows in 2 months, pull it and have the shop switch the guts over?? Will it just bolt right up for the time being?

Any help is appreciated!! The reason I wanted to throw the Astro trans in right now is because I had the motor rebuilt last year and it still has not been started for the 1st time and I need to get it going before I store it for the winter..

Re: Trans Question Any Help

im not sure why its leaking fluid from there if it hasnt been started, i would think it would work to move the truck around just fine.
im a little unsure what they were doing at the cooler line fittings at the trans to add a cooler you would usually do that at the radiator connections.
on 700r4 tansmission there is a fitting that screws into the trans then the line screws into it, if they stripped out the threads in the case your probably going to have to swap transmissions, if they just snapped of the fitting a good mechanic, trans guy should be able to get it out and replace it.
the biggest problem is access those fittings are up high, not much room , they may have to lower it a little for some room. any way i would talk to a trans guy, a good one ,and maybe get his opinion.
well hope it all works out , this type of stuff really sucks

Yeah, I am not sure how they broke the case on the trans and they didn't let me know how bad it was when they dropped it off at my house. I was just hoping I could use the Astro Van tranny to use for a month and then switch things over.

deleted quoted thread

Good Info!

From my point of view it looks like the threaded connection was either run too deep in the housing and cracked it or else it was jacked up too high on installation and broke the top of the housing. I hope i am explaining this right. The upper female threaded trans cooler line on the right hand side is the broken part. hehe. oh gosh.

if that fitting is broken off in the case they might be able to extract it with an easy out , if they can get it low enough for a little room, id give it a shot you really have nothing to loose if the alternative is replacing the trans.
