Turbo upgrade question

My new build will be forged bottom, vortecs, atr headers, alky, custom cam,3k stall with built trans,RPM front mount, ported lower intake,52mm TB, roller rockers, 60# injectors, might be missing a few things. I have the option of a 62mm or 67mm turbo. Both .82 exhaust side. Both billet wheels. What one would you guys recommend?

67mm You have all the mods to support it. Rode in a truck recently that had a 70mm with similar mods.

Ac is already gone. Just didn't know if the 67 would be too big and I'd make more power and drivability with the 62

Re: Turbo upgrade question

From what I remember you have to remove it.

I ran a 61mm and ac was intact. I currently have a 62 but never fit it up. I would think its similar. The compressor housing on the 67 is just BIG.

Re: Turbo upgrade question

I am currently running a ball bearing 63 and love it. Spools very fast and has plenty of grunt for the street. I still have A/C. I briefly ran a ball bearing 72 (about one day), but it had way to much lag for my 2800 stall, and I put the 63 back in. I couldn't build any (zero) boost for a boost launch, and the turbo didn't spool until I hit second gear. The 72 did clear the A/C with a small spacer between the exhaust manifold and turbo. The installed 72 is shown in the picture.

Re: Turbo upgrade question

I figured with the light billet wheels, and the .82 turbine housing I don't think spool will be a huge issue. I have a .89 with a 54mm now and it spools very fast

this is the PTE 72mm i used to have on my truck. I had an AC delete pulley, and it cleared the pulley and accessory bracket.

Remember, most people who use PTE turbos, are using the SyTy turbine housing (.85ar). Which is made to fit the trucks. If you are going to use a 3-bolt GN turbo with an adapter, or a T4 with an adapter. That is going to move the turbo around. Also headers, instead of stock manifolds will move the turbo around.

I have a custom 3 inch downpipe with vbands. So the housing is not an issue. It should mate right up from my old turbo

Re: Turbo upgrade question

Personally, I would probably do the 62mm.

The 67mm has the potential for 700+ hp at high boost levels. A 62 has the potential for well past 600 maybe 650hp. I am guess your built transmission isn't a 4L80e either. You probably don't have enough injector for a 67mm pushing high boost either. On the flip side you could go with 67 and have some head room if you wasn't to go faster later.

Yeah still 700r4. And that's what I'm thinking. I'll have this truck for a long time. Eventually 4l80e and Holley with bigger fuel system. At least I won't have to worry about getting another turbskie lol

I bought a new PTE 6776. But I have headers on that truck. Maybe give me more clearance with the AC.

Re: Turbo upgrade question

I have atr headers, and no AC or ac bracket so size isn't much of an issue

Re: Turbo upgrade question

So does anyone think I'll be slower or lose power with the 67 over the 62?

Re: Turbo upgrade question

Just run either Turbo! Goin from a 62 to a 67 is maginal. I went from a 63 to a 72 and didn't hardly notice a difference in Spool up. All in the Tune and Converter.
