Turbo Whistle......BOIOIOING!!!

OK....tonight I heard this beautiful mating call. It was the whistle of a turbo. It was at least a block away, but unmistakeably a turbo. After a few seconds, I (unfortunately) could also hear the accompanying rattle of a diesel. So I have to ask, because I don't know what I don't know......

What makes some turbos (for example, ones on diesels) louder, sometimes MUCH louder than ones on a gas engine? I'm not saying that all turbos on gas engines are quiet, I've heard some Turbo Regals that scream like banshees. But in comparison, my Ty and other Sy's and Ty's I've been around are quiet as a church mouse. Heck, even the one time I tried a run at the strip with only the orange elbow on the turbo, and no air cleaner tube.......I could hardly hear the difference at all! (By the way--that one run gained me nothing.)

So is it just the design of the turbo? Or could it be the exhaust? Is the whistle I hear from turbo diesels coming out the exhaust pipe?

When I heard that whistle, I immediately thought "I want my Ty to have a whistle like that!" (Although maybe not quite THAT loud.)

diesel engines run alot more boost, cause they are self ignitors, there is better burning control.
high compression, high boost, makes you want to own a diesel engine

When I owned my buick gn sure it whistled two times as loud as my sy which sucks for the sy I agree.. that noise gives me wood... but to try to answer your question of where it's coming from i'll say that once I installed an exhaust cutout where the dp meets the exhuast under the car.. it was three times louder easy so maybe you need a cutout on the ty to get a little more sound? of course that would also net you some major boost control problems if your stock

plus some trucks have the air filter hanging on the outside of the truck...making it like a megaphone.

if you want a louder turbo....run an open downpipe and and open turbo. you'll hear it just fine.

speaking of duramax, i been thinking about getting a dd/tow vehicle myself

well I would choose Cummins or even Powerstroke before I wasted my time and money on a Duramax.

The only reason I would do a durmax in the Ty is before the Cummins is too long and its against my religion to put a (Ford) International engine in a GM product :lol:

I have been contemplating posting this question as well. I drove a 99 Power Stroke F250 at my old job for a FEW years and couldnt handle not hearing that sound. I can hear my stock turbo pretty good since I have a fender cut out but its nothing like those trucks.

Yeah, after upgrading to the 60-1 from the stock turbo, I was really stoked. The turbo sounds great and I like the flutter you hear after getting out of a WOT blast...much louder than stock.

my stock Syclone is loud as hell on a stock setup though

The reason the turbo sounds so loud on A diesel is because they redline at around 3000rpm

I have on video a T/A that redlines at 8000 and it whistles like a mo fo. It sure is pretty runnning its low 9's.
