So, Im hoping someone has some insight. truck runs cold, but once it warms up, it dyes and will not restart until it cools off. Checked coil- have spark, checked ign. module- seems to be good. any ideas? would greatly appreciate!

Re: TY Problem

My ty did the same thing last fall. I couldnt figure it out and the truck was stuck at work for a week.Had both fuel and spark, just for the hell of it I swapped the ecm, problem solved. It can be several issues so no garantees but the electronics giving up in a 20 year old truck isnt that unlikely I guess. My truck couldnt for some reason I still havent figured out make the transtions in the different tables in the ecm.

Have you used datamaster or a scantool?

Re: TY Problem

Damn, well the ecm was not the problem. still doing the same thing. starts and runs, then dies. wait 45 min and it will start again. I have fuel, i have spark. what else could it possibly be. Anyone? I changed out most sensors about a year and a half ago.

Re: TY Problem

I think its the temp sensor for the ECM on the drive side of motor near steering shaft. I had the same problem on a 88 Jimmy before.

Re: TY Problem

Coolant temp. sensor. I had it go on mine and had the same no start problem. I would wait 20-30 mins and it would start. It was a about $30 to replace.

You should be able to see on a scan tool if the coolant sensor is off or not, so you aren't randomly replacing parts.

Re: TY Problem

Does anyone know if our trucks will start if the ECM water temp sensor is disconnected?

I know the ecm has a coolant temp correction table that affects spark timing, think there also is limitations built in around -35 to -45 degrees celcius, so if the sensor is disconnectet and it reads it as -40degrees celcius and there are +40 outside its not gonna run good (only if its a NTC if postive then the other way around). I know some ecm's has override functions to combats scenarios like this, but dont have access to enough information about our ecm, maybe some of the true code59 gurus can tell us.

Hope the answer helped a little atleast

Re: TY Problem

It doesn't have to show a code. If the coolant temp reads 0 degrees on 30 degree day with the truck running for a couple minutes, you will know that something is wrong.

Coolant temp was reading normal at the time(s) I was having the no start problem.

I have never tried, I know one Sy owner who had his coolant sensor go back in the summer and he clogged up his catalytic converter on a road trip.

The ECM or the Cluster Gauge?

I supose if the ECM coolant sensor was acting flaky (ie moving all around/noisy signal), the scan tool might not accurately display the odd readings as they scan tool updates the data about 6 times second.

Re: TY Problem

When you checked the coil. Did you try another coil and the truck still died? I have had a bad coil cause this same problem when it gets hot. Vehicle would start right back up when the coil cooled down.
