U-Joint fix help

Well...i was driving and i heard some clanking around underneath the floorboard. it lasts from 0 to about 30mph, then goes away. I went to look at the joint underneath and got lots of play out of it. I think it's the bearings but not sure exactly...how would i go around repairing this?, and is it safe to drive with?

Re: U-Joint fix help

if it's the front one a new driveshaft is about the only way, someone here probably has a used stocker for sale, a new one from gm is crazy expensive. best fix would be a gilbert. about 400 or so, might have went up since i bought one. i went through two stocker before i bought one. if its a rear shaft just get new u joints not a big deal. but if its a front its not a good idea to drive it, if it lets go much carnage. you can get away with pulling it and driving w/o for a few days but its not good for the transfer or rear tires and you'll have to set the park brake any time you park it or it will roll away

Re: U-Joint fix help

ok...not 100% sure that it's the driveshaft or u-joints yet. I pulled it forward about 20 feet and backed it up and no movement in the joint now. it sounds like it's coming from the front right...maybe tire area...i'm not sure...

Re: U-Joint fix help

ok...scratch that...got my friend over here and he took a look at it too. i put the truck in reverse and the joint moves about 1-1 1/2 cm and then catches and goes...then i put it into drive and same thing and then it starts clicking...it's really bad on turns and stuff when i have the tires turned about 45 degrees or less... it's the rear drive shaft u joint that's doing it. what do you think about this?

Re: U-Joint fix help

i'd catch a ride or take something else to the local autoparts and pick up a set of new u-joints and replace them both, pump some grease in the new parts and be done with it. i wouldn't drove if i had a choice unless i was pulling it up my driveway to work on it

Yup, you can read how to remove the old ones in my post here.

Re: U-Joint fix help

oh yeah, you might need some heat (torch) to remove them, cause i know gm uses plastic pins to help retain the u-joints on some applications.

Re: U-Joint fix help

awesome. thanks guys. i'm just wanting to be 100% sure on this...so judging by what i've said...do y'all think it is the u-joints? u-joints aren't expensive are they? like $20?

Re: U-Joint fix help

well shit....took it up to my local mechanic because i don't have time to look at it really and he says it's the front u-joint...so new drive shaft i'm guessing?

Re: U-Joint fix help

ok...my mechanic said he could do it all...fix with labor for $360. what do you guys think? i'd do it myself...i just don't have the time with work and all this other shit.

360 to fix it? might as well order a gilber and be done with and never worry about it again. it's just a little over 400. i think george blake sells them or one of our other vendors. the stock front driveshafts on these trucks are a joke

If you are talken rear drive shaft and both u joints on that shaft to me that is high, but for dallas that may be an ok price.

My shop (dealer) would be 150-160 labor and whatever the joints are. that would make your u-joint 105 each. I have seen GM that high but no grease points.

Not tryen to put any tech down(no tech like that unless they deserve it then they know) becuase i do not know what he is fully going to do.

If you trust the guy with your truck it is worth the money hands down.

If it is the front for the hole shaft that is a good deal to me.

280-300 to do everything, labor included. i would love to buy that gilber and be done with it, but i don't have that much money right now (my gf is giving me 200 to do this right now and i can barely come up with the rest). time is an expensive thing as well. right now this is just a quick fix and over the summer i'm going to work my ass off and get this truck back to '96. hopefully new hoses, the whole shebang.
