wastegate on crossover

hey guys,
im building a 97 s10 bs 4.3 with syclone manifolds and a turbonectics 61mm turbo. my plan was to make a spacer to go between the turbo and manifolds to mount my wastegate to. but im cruched for time and i do like where the turbo sits right on the manifolds. so i was tossing around the idea of just mounting it on the crossover.

im concerned with how well it works though, venting just one bank. ive searched through lots of threads looking for some experience on it but found very few problems with it.

the short block should hold 600 horse, but i do not plan on pushing it anytime soon. i will likely keep it at less then 15lbs for this year. and even then i only have 42lb injectors right now.

the wastegate is a 41mm tial, so let me hear how good or bad everyone elses setup works at controlling boost!

heres a picture!

Re: wastegate on crossover

Well regarding the placement of an external wastegate it does
not matter if you mount it on the left or right bank but
it must be in the exhaust pressure side ( of both banks ) my
wastegate is also mounted in the cross over piping and works great !!!

P.S is your turbo a ball bearing unit ???

Check on eBay, they sell an adapter that will have an external wastegate flange on it. It's only about $40 or so.

Re: wastegate on crossover

the turbo is journal bearing version of the gtk-550.

the spacers with the wastegate flange wont work, i picked one up already. all 8 holes on it are threaded. yea i could drill them out, but the 4 by the wastegate flange you cant fit a bolt head or nut on, theres no room. so then id have to dill out the holes on the manifold and i would be stuck with the wastegate hole pointed twords the compressor housing. and then with it being just a straight spacer it will probably throw the turbo into my inner fender.

if im going to go through that much trouble then ill just build my own.

Have one built the way you want it. The hardest part is getting the flanges. Then you can make the wastegate line go wherever you want it to and put the wastegate itself where you want it to. I personally wouldn't just relieve one manifold of pressure. The only other option is an internal wastegate exhaust housing, which does make things much easier. Or just use the adapter you have and make a line off of it so you can point it towards the exhaust housing. Just flange it off for now and take it to a muffler shop when it's running and have it done up.

Re: wastegate on crossover

i can do the work myself, its just more time consuming over putting it in the crossover. which is what im pressed for right now, time.

i know building a spacer and putting the wastegate there is a better idea. what im trying to figure out is how well it works or doesnt work on the crossover. i havent read of anyone pushing one too hard...

ive heard of too many issues with internal gates... besides i already have my turbo.

I had the w.g spacer also from RPM but it was a pain
installing the nuts so i welded the wastegate in the cross over
pipe with no issues and more room under the turbo just
weld it on and be a happy camper !!!

Re: wastegate on crossover

thats probably whats going to end up happening unless a few poeple post up huge problems with doing it. lol.

thanks for the input so far guys.

Re: wastegate on crossover

, I was first using an adapter with the adapter bolted to the manifold using allen heads then just regular bolts through the turbo to the adapter work well only down fall it hit the fender well. Then I thought of putting it in the cross over as I've seen and I didn't like the way it would only vent the drivers side. I have the line running of the compressor to the gate with an 11 ib spring no boost creep works great

That is the correct location for the external wastegate i welded mine
on the ATR headers in the same spot no boost creep at 30 psi !!

but in the cross over pipe will work also !!

Re: wastegate on crossover

i like that setup, my manifolds have been welded on a lot already though and have way too much work into them for what they are. they might crack when i finally get this thing going.

thanks for the help guys, we'll see what happens today when i get to working on it...
