what does this mean

Ok, so tonight i dropped my girlfriend off at her house, and on the way home i was like hmm....It's cold out, I wonder how the truck is running. So from a roll at about 15 i punch it to the floor.

I look up at the boost guage that i just had install and it is reading 19psi. At the same time, I can feel the truck start to kinda cut off. So i back off the gas really fast thinking that is the stock fuel pump not being able to deal with that boost. Then, a second or so later i see the check engine like come on for like 2seconds then go off....Is this what happens when you get an overboost. I don't have datamaster, so i can't scan it to see if the truck threw any codes. Is there another way to check.

Then i decide to launch it a little while after that, but not a hard launch, like just out of vacume, and the truck takes off like a bat out of hell. I look at the gauge and the truck is reading 17psi.

Yes, that's overboost. It shuts down so that you don't overboost even more, hopefully avoiding breaking stuff...

So i really shouldn't be all that worried about it. I should just take it easy, and not get on it so hard when it is really cold out.
How long does the truck store codes, and will it affect anything, or will it still give me the regular 15psi all the time now.

Yeah, I backed out of it pretty quick, cause i had an idea of what was happening and didn't want to break anything.

Constant overboosting can do bad things . Just for shits and giggles, have you ever pulled your ECM to see what chip you have in there? My truck overboosted like crazy when I first got it. Pulled the ECM one day on a whim and there was a Hypercrap chip installed :-?... Good thing I drive like a old person for the most part or else I could have done some real damage.

The trouble codes will be stored until the battery voltage is removed. A code 31 (Wastegate Overboost) will not prevent you from overboosting again. So, you can and will get more than 15 psi if you're not careful. The check engine light only tells you of the problem and will do nothing to prevent it in the future.

You don't need Datamaster or even a code reader to pull the codes to see what's going on if you have a paper clip and some time. Here's a link that will show you how to do it: http://www.sportmachines.com/maintenance/aldl.html HTH's

Don't get too excited yet. Check the vacuum lines and elbows around the boost control solenoid. My bet is that you have got a cracked elbow. Close replacements can be obtained at almost any auto supply store. These lines are the biggest cause of overboost and are easily corrected.

You may want to just replace all the lines at this time.

I will try that paper clip thing tomorrow, and see what codes the truck has thrown.
I did recently check the vacume lines and none of them were cracked or worn through or rubbing. I will look again though.

Where is the ECM located on our trucks. I have never looked at that before. Maybe i should look at that and see if it is the stock chip. The person i bought the truck from said it was. but he may not have known either.

Also watch the vacuum line up towards the top of the dash when you're puttin stuff back together. You don't wanna pinch it.

well if he had something "other" than the stock chip, i wouldnt overboost would it? doesnt that kinda go away??

i doubt its anything more than just an overboost code man. it happens all the time to me when the temps drop.

Depends on the chip we raised mine to 23psi on the race gas chips
