When Does A Sy/Ty Become Just A Sonoma / Jimmy?

Just curious to see what type of response and reasoning there would be behind it.

The thing that made me think of asking this openly is a quote from a FS thread for the clone in Michigan:

In the long run, it is a blazer, nothing more. It is a blazer with speed parts on it, unfortunatly, the market isnt bringing a lot for the authentic ones, so why would a clone even come close in price?

This is kind of around those lines, but flipped.

When does a Syclone or a Typhoon lose it's status? IMO, if the motor is replaced with something other than a stock block and/or the AWD system is axed, it pretty much just becomes another Sonoma or Jimmy with a ground effects kit.

:werd: couldn't have put it better myself. The first two that come to mind is the white "naked" Ty that's been for sale for a while and Turrbo6's pro-street syclone. They are pretty far outside the traditional mold, but I still say Sy and Ty for those two.

i referred to mine as "my S10" all the time.

VIN, turbo6 powerplant and AWD make it a SyTy.

physically, its a Blazer with "speed parts" and documentation.

I looked at that Ty... (the nekkid one) IMHO it's ugly... missing everything that /visually/ makes it special. They still want good money for a car that's missing almost $4k in parts. Sure it's a blast to jump on it at a light and fool that guy in the civic next to you, but try explaining it to co-workers or a spouse who see it as a Jimmy. Sure, it's VIN says it's a Ty, but who wants a sleeper? I've had a real sleeper, a GTO. It always impressed people because it /naturally/ didn't look like much.

But, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

(I just made this up). So you can do SyTy %'s based on those 5 factors. V8tt Ty is 80% is SyTy. Vicious v6 clone was 80%. Silly Ty is 60%. Maybe you need 3 of the 5 if. It includes cladding. :dunno:

I like this. I would also include the upper intake with "Syclone" on it. Definately a part made for the truck that is an easy identifier as soon as you lift the hood. (I would even count it if it had been changed to "Typhoon" if someone put the plate on as many with Typhoons have). It is just part of the truck.

Just an opinion take it or leave it. I am sure plenty of people here have a different idea on the subject.

I don't own one but IMO it's when the powerplant changes. It loses what makes it a Syclone and the reason they kick so much A__. I saw a video of a Sy with a 383 IIRC in it and I think at that point it really is a Sonoma/S10 with a body kit and a run of the mill v8 swap. I don't mean to step on anybody's toes.

LOL i've only met three people who have known about Sy/Ty's in my life and I love to Explain to people what they are but I don't want the majority to know about them because it takes away the cool/sleeper factor.

I think we all have our own set of qualifications as to what makes a truck a sy/ty or not.. Mine are:

1) Its has to have a turbo
2) It has to be AWD
3) It has to have cladding
