who has the rustiest syty?

surprisingly, I probably dont have the rustiest, considering how much I drive it, and the fact that its attacked by salt air every day of its life. I have the infamous rear roof seem rust on the pass side, which will soon be leaving, and the drivers side fender has rust on the lower portion behind the cladding, which will also be going bye-bye this winter. Past that, the pass side floorboard under the carpet was my only other rust area, and that was repaired right before Nats in July.

Well, if you consider Potter's Braphoon a "SyTy' then I vote for it. Any truck that can gain a tenth in the 1/4 just by walking around and beating on the fenders has my vote. :D

Why prevent it? Take advantage of it (rust = weight loss).....it's not like these trucks are unique or anything.

ive seen the rust under the frot cladding on 2 sy's, mine was one. The rust starts at the screw holes at 2 and 10 oclock and travels under the cladding.

I still use the same material we did when we were a zieart franchise here.
ziebart sold their chemical manufacturing biz a few years ago soi continue to buy the same stuff.

dont think rustproofing would have stopped this as its actually a surface rust. rustproofing done correctly is more for protecting seams.
Dont need a flame here on rustprooofing, i allready know the pros and cons out there.

unfortunately 1 winter in rochester was enough for rust to develop under the cladding by the front wheel arches, plus the famous spot over the wheel arches where the cladding rubs the paint away. fortunately the truck is now is in a climate controlled garage so I shouldn't see any more.

I got the same. About the size of a pencil eraser. What are you doing to fix it?... doing yourself or having a shop do it? I need to get that fixed soon, so it doesn't spread. Its the only rust on the truck.

I haven't had the truck out in the winter yet here in MI. I was planning on driving it this winter, but it turns out I didn't have to.
Do you take it to a drive through wash or something regularly to avoid the salt building up? I normally wouldn't take it to one, but its too damn cold to be out there with a bucket and a wash mit.

I'd post pics but i don't have my digi cam here at work today. I have rust behind the cladding on both driver and passenger front wheel arches from rubbing. A little bit in the driver side door jam. And the worst of it is under my rear driver side window just below the weather stripping. It's under the paint :( and growing. Also there's a little bit on the inside bottom of the tail gate. I need new paint badly!!

Yep, I also have some rust on the passenger's side fender under the cladding. I plan to replace both fenders with fiberglass stuff on the long run which could give me protection against rust forever in that area. Also a little weight reduction... I wish there would be an easier way to ship stuff with this size here. :-?

Peace,

HARRRR!!!
Dangit Hood you beat me to it!

While I'm sure I've got the competition beat when it comes to rust, I have to disqualify myself because it's not a true SYTY.

But thanks for reminding me. I've got to go punch a hole in the front panels so I can win BW's races. :)

Good deal. I wanna see how it turns out. Problem for me doing this project would be re-painting. I'd have to have the whole damn truck repainted if it didn't turn out good.... not that the truck couldn't use a paint job.

Hey,

Ty- blk/blk, 100k+ miles. Rust: doors, jams, radiator support, ps floor, quarters behind the cladding, roof- could take my hand and reach into the rear gate just above the window. Basically, all above the back (rear tailgate) window was rotted out and it went 6 inches down the DS of the area around the rear window. I can't remember if the fenders were rotted or the tailgate... Frame was solid...

If anyone in the northeast needs minor body work done and doesnt mind leaving their truck with me, I'd be happy to give ya some estimates. I can also fix cracked cladding too. :D

The Ty im about to buy has a some nice rust bubbles above the back window. Plus all the paint on the front end is about half peeled and faded. thats what you get for getting a cheap paint job. May possibly have a little more rust too, it resides in hawaii now, way to much moisture there

My Ty has bubbling paint at the rear seams, top of rear window, and by one of thge tail lights. The firewall has surface rust along with the inside door jams and tail gate seams.
