Will this make me a bitch?

I really hate to say this but, I am so busy with life that I am starting to think seriously about letting my machine shop build my engine. I know I can do it as I have don many but damn, time is precious these days. I'll admit that this build is much more pricey than anything I have ever done and this thing will require real precision but I am just not sure I should take it on. Here is the build
Bowtie Block .030
Forged Crower Crank with 2.1 journals and 3.5 stroke
JE Pistons Xtreme duty 9.9:1 compression
Aluminum Bowtie heads
Jesel 1.6 shaft mount rockers
Cam - 582 lift243 duration
and 76mm turbo.

I'm hunting for a 10.99 or better and be sure I don't have any issues. I'll be running E98 also.

Sow what do you guys think? Should I bitch out or keep my big boy pants on and build it? I can't stand when people don't have the balls to build their own trucks and then brag about how fast or great they are and really don't want to lower myself to one of "those guys" but man is free time rare these days.

As I see it, building an engine is just assembling parts. I realize there is a lot more to it than that; machining, blueprinting, balancing, etc. but my point is a monkey can be trained to use a torque wrench. I believe the real "work" in a build is in the tuning, installation, and attention to the details.

Yes, for sure.

J/k, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Hey, when you get that 10.99 time slip....That makes you a FAST bitch, and me a jealous one!

my only fear with machine shops is making sure the parts you want, paid for or dropped off with the motor are in it.

I have no problem with a shop building and blueprinting the short block, but I'll take it from there.

Re: Will this make me a bitch?

Have a great machine shop build it.

Was wondering what is the max bore for your Bowtie block? If it is 4.155" , I would not just go w/a .030 over a 4" bore.
Having a big bore will allow for more airflow (you can open up/unshroud the chamber walls) & more power not to mention more cubic inches.

A 4" stroke would be nice also..:2cents::tup:

i think your more realistic problem is getting the work done. you might as well do it yourself 1/2 a week would still be waaayyyyyy faster than any of these jokers around town....unless you are taking it to denver...

which brings me to my next 4 weekends my woman is back in md/jerz... I wanna throw down on that tc, and front mount...

I have a machine shop that I love and trust to no end and the guy has done 5 or 6 engines for my dad, my brother and I, all of which were awesome. Plus you can't beat $200 to assemble a long block!

Re: Will this make me a bitch?

Sometimes your better off doing things your self! My father just recently had a pontiac 428 ci engine go down after running only 30 minutes! What's weird as the engine was dynoed before mine and his eyes! Ran 30minutes on the dyno and made 550hp. Installed it in his 65 gto and started knocking withen 5 miles of test driving! Tore engine down and found the bearings all chewed up and main bearings just fell out of the caps! All n all it was over aligned bored and put together really dirty! My father who actually owns a fairly large heavy equipment diesel only machine shop had had a local well reputation machine shop do the machine work , assembly and dyno! Unfortunately the machine shop owner was just diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor so we chose not to say anything to him about the failure! just chalked it up as a loss! My dad would of done the work himself if weren't such a pain to set up gas engines on his equipment! The same guy was going to build my bowtie for me, after this ill just take my time and do it myself! So what I'm saying is sometimes your better off to do it yourself! Good luck to you! I'm planning on breaking a 8.99 with mine! Plans are a race weight of 3200 lbs with me in it! Ams controller for launch, Kilgore 2.10 or 1.90 lite weight internal th400 to put as much power down outa the hole as possible!! Fueled by e98!

Yeah I guess that's true, I always say you're better off doing it yourself. Plus, it's not like I have ever spent more than a day on assembly.

Re: Will this make me a bitch?

Use a good, reputable machine shop for your short block. A good engine builder is just as valuable as a good tuner for a high hp build. It's not just bolting a bunch of parts together that any monkey can do. For instance, I just had my bottom end rebuilt this year & had it done by a exceptional engine builder. He caught a number of things including the ring gaps in my brand new pistons being a thou & a half too small(rings would go in, but were too tight. piston manufacturer remachined to spec), wrist pins too heavy to balance rotating assembly (wrist pins spec'd by manufacturer were massive. ended up edm wiring out inside to lighten them to work with my existing billet crank), among a couple of other small things. You are going to have to have someone balance your rotating assembly, as well all the machining on the block. I'd just have them put the short block together for you as well. The experience & knowledge of a good engine builder I feel is WELL worth the money, especially when you start talking Bowtie expenses. On a side note, are you planning on a partial fill on the block?

I hadn't planned on it, do you think I should? Although this will no longer be a daily driver since I practically live in my work truck, I still want it to be capable of that status. Would the partial fill result in higher engine temps?

Mike I know what you fear so yes you are a bitch

:rotf:

I feel like i'll be letting my baby down if I don't do EVERYTHING like I always do. I have always taken a lot of pride in my truck and always values the fact that it's all me. Hate to sell out now when I have come so far.

Well said. Agree 100%.

Re: Will this make me a bitch?

I do not see the harm either way.

You will either work to do the build yourself OR you will work to earn the money to pay a professional to do it. After all, 98% of the really fast guys around the globe hire others to build their engines.
