Just sold a 3.08 8.5 locally last week. I find them every month or two. PM if you are interested in one from Fl.

Re: WTB 2WD 8.5 3.42 axle

The only 8.5 made in an S10 was a ZR2 and it's 2" wider than your stocker. You'll need to run front Syty wheels on the rear. All other rear diffs were 7.5 and 7.625. The ZR2 will bolt right in.

What is the distance between wheel mounting surfaces on a stock SyTy?

ZR2 is 63"
Stock is 59"
2WD is 54.5"

This has been covered many times. There are 8.5's found all the time. Most often I find the 4x4 ZR2. Kinda sucky cause of the width... The only 59" 8.5's are found in 4.3 4x4 5 speed 2nd gen s-10's. I found them most often in 2 door blazers. Have found one in over 2 years though... But s-10 planet seems to have one all the time...

You are also wrong about the width of the zr2 rear. It is 63" vs the 59" of our stocker. It is 4" wider not 2".

It is 2" on each side. If it was only 2" wider I would have been pulling them all the time because it would be nice to be able to use 4 fronts and rotate tires! But alas no such luck....

I have been looking for years for one local, never any luck stoped checking for about 5 months and one poped up local and BMFB grabbed it

No you are wrong, sorry. It's a complete myth that they ever came in anything but a ZR2. There was an iron front diff in 95-96, that's the only oddball diff ever offered. I have every single S10 brochure from 1994-2004, I can show you the diff options.

How come I have a 4x4 width 8.5" Diff at my house then?

thanks rodger,
i can build a rear, i was just after something more bolt in. i may end up narrowing an 8.8 if i cant find an 8.5 this summer.

Re: WTB 2WD 8.5 3.42 axle

If it was provided - which it possible - it was never documented in any of the S10 books or any of the brochures I have. I've pulled and sold nearly 50 sets of S10 gears over the years - several out of 5-speeds - they've always had 7.625s and if they were 4x4 in 95-96 they were iron fronts as well (most common in Blazers).

I have three 8.5s and none of them have that "weight" on the pinion - they all came from S10s too. My brothers 01 Xtreme 7.625 has that same weight, so no it's not a 8.5 thing only.

The ZR2 is 100mm or 3.9" wider (2" on either side) the rear axle however is only 3" (1.5" on either side) and not the full 4" like the front frame rails are.

Re: WTB 2WD 8.5 3.42 axle

there is no rpo code for them, they were generally in 5 speed 4.3 trucks (extended cab's have even a better chance) and blazers. not all of them got an 8.5 though, its hit or miss.

all you have to do is a google search and there are loads of results on this... i dont understand why your arguing this, its pretty common knowledge for anyone making any power with a s-series truck. ill take a picture with a tape measure for you when i find one, or i can get a picture of my buddies truck while he has the bed off. even though its clearly 2wd and stock width.
