ZQ8 steering box

Picked up what I was told was the ZQ8 box. This one, on the bench, goes 3 1/4 turns from lock to lock. Haven't got the stocker off yet to compare.

Thought the 12.7:1 box was a hair over 2 turns L/L.

What have I got here???

Thanks - Barry

Not sure what you have got there, but it doesn't sound like the 12:1.

My ZQ8 box I just installed goes about 2 turns L/L, but I have coilovers and no steering stops so I am not hitting full lock. Got mine from Waller, said him and Michael Hood were running the same box with no problems, so I think I got the right one :D

The stock Typhoon box is 16.5:1 and it was 3+ turns L/L.
Specs from the dealer brochure say the 93 Typhoon is 3.1 turns L/L.

It may be deceiving out on the bench since there is no linkage attached to measure lock to lock. I'd hate to hoist that beetch in there jsut to find out it was wrong though.

While your at it, can someone list the ZQ8 steering box part number? I have 26040591, but when I ran that number on GM parts direct web site it came up empty.

Just checking the pricing. I understand this is a no brainer bolt up. Yes?

Just finished the ZQ8 install. Lock-to-lock turns on the bench means nothing, but the *angle* of Pittman arm movement per turn of the input shaft does. My old lock-to-lock was 3.3 or thereabouts, now got two and a fraction. Should be nice.

Easy job SyTy wise, but my engine's out which makes access a whole lot easier. Got my ZQ8 from a Google search on 'used auto parts' - $125 from a yard in eastern MI. Missed out on one on eBay that went for $156.....}%^}E. Yup, its a bolt-in; only prob I had was removing the Pittman arm from the new box; man, that sucker was ON there! Pittman puller & blue tip wrench finally worked; pretzeled a 3/4" breaker bar, though. Pittman puller also doubles as the connecting rod ball joint puller w/ just a little bit of grinding of the jawa inside.

I have GM# 15059802 as the correct listing, although the used box I purchased had a different 8 digit # written in chalk on it.
List price is over $500

GM parts direct responds

Here's the response I got nack from GM parts direct.com. I think their price was $170, but it is listed as a steering gear , -not box. Not sure how to enterpret that?

Steering gear = steering box. Old school terminology is "steering box" usually referring to the old manual steering gears. Our trucks use a power integral steering gear - differing from the other type of steering gear which is rack and pinion. Integral gear setups are stronger than rack and pinion which is why they are used on trucks.

To get really specific, our trucks use a 525 "bigfoot" gear which differs slightly in physical size (smaller) from the CK 800 series gears used in full size pickups. The 525 gear is the same one that was used in the Gen 3 F-body. Keep in mind these are mfg. numbers - not valid part numbers. Different valves offering different "stiffness", and different rack piston gears provide the major differences in steering feel and ratio.

That's as I remember it from the late 80's/early 90's while working for GM's steering division (Saginaw), integral gear plant....

Hi
Re the steering box issue: What car or truck came stock with this faster ratio box? I have a couple of Camaro fromt clips; Steering box appears to be the same as on the 'Phoon. (Externally anyway. . . ) And they are definately faster raito units.
Also, impact wrenches work much better for breaking loose stuff like pitman arms / tie rod ends than the constant torque of a breaker bar or end wrench. Just make sure you "back up" the "blows" with some sort of a heavy object ( I use a 3# single jack / hammer held up against the part.) so as not to damage the "innards".
