ALL Please read, new piston possibility.

As some know, I work at a company that designs and makes piston rings. Although all for aerospace applications (planes, shuttle, nuclear reactors, etc.) read high dollar rings.

As a company owned by Dover corporation, there are other companies also owned by dover that I sometimes get to have contact with, do business with etc.

Of these companies is JE and Weisco piston.

It so happens, we are getting ready to do some work with Weisco making some rings. (can't say anymore). It also happens I had asked my big boss (VP), if he could get me some syty pistons.

Well the good news is YES, Weisco has said they will make me a custom set to my design for a GOOD price.

My next question was, since I like the syty people is. What if I want 10 sets, not just 1.

So here is situation and question

I can get a custom designed piston made to our specs, JE specs, whatever we want and most likely get a good price for us. This will have to be a group purchase type deal, if it works out, but at this point I need to know interest, who is building motors, how many sets etc.

Will be much more powerful, and accurate if I can say I want to get XX sets made, how much?

If you will be buying, or WOULD buy pistons in next 6 months or so, if price is right and design is right on piston, please post here, or email me

ty1295@insightbb.com

I know I am going to get a set, and will be working with them to design a piston for OUR application, the weight we want (same as JE) and the strength we need. I just need to know if anybody else is interested also.

Price: I don't know for sure, but would be a fair amount less than JE.

At this point I need to know interest, and any design requests anybody would have.

next 6 months?

hmm... if they are tested and proven, i might have flow in the next 6 months for an extra set for the future build(s).

is there any sort of estimate on pricing yet jeff?

good work, btw..... glad to see companys willing to do work like this. always a plus.

Hey Jeff, I'm in! I would just need to know price and design specs before I send a check. what CR are ya thinkin?

Sounds good. What advantages are you thinking of incorporating over the current JE/SRP?

I think that if you can get them to build them at a good price there will be a demand. Kind of like your mounts and Ian's hose kits-Not everyone needs one right now but most of us will if not now, later.

Im interested depending on price as I really dont need a set but if the price is right....... why not.

PRICE:

I know what I will get my set for, I can't get any more sets at this price though. :(

It is catch 22, hard to get price without getting quanity of sets wanted, hard to get quantity without a price.

I am guessing... (REMEBER THIS IS A GUESS!!) price to be ~30% less than JE, Maybe even more.

I haven't approached them yet about this exact senario outside of asking my boss. No real need until I can say, we will be needing 10 sets.

As far as a on going order when you want. Not so sure that will happen. This will probably be a 1 time GP.

Design? Not sure, I figure when I know we want XX sets, I will find out who there best engineer is, and be dialing the phone, email etc.

As mentioned, I will be working with them anyways on some new rings we are going to make/develop for them so I will have a good in, not just anybody calling them direct.

In fact they DO NOT like to deal with special stuff, unless you have a in, and must be good at that.

I am not forcing anybody to committ, just getting an idea. I don't expect anybody to say yea I want a set, without a picture, design info, price etc. I just can't get that stuff until I get an approx #.

Jeff, If the price beats the JE, I am in. As long as the quality is at least as good as a JE and the price is better, I can't understand why anyone that will be rebuilding wouldn't want in.

I would say get a quote for 10 sets, and a quote for 20 sets. I'm sure that there will be people who need pistons, and if not enough to make 10 or 20 sets maybe McCoy or another rebuilder will chime in for more than one set.

Wasn't there a guy on here a while ago that was asking if we wanted package deals and such (did work with GN, Green knew him). Maybe he'd be in for a set or two.

I'll be buying pistons in the next 6 months, but what are the inadaquacies you see in the current pistons out there that you want to have another one made? JE/SRP already make low compression pistons for 5.7 rods. Also people seem to like the TRWs.

Biggest is cost. I am almost positive I can get us some good pistons, at a good price.

In fact our company also owns JE, I just don't have as big of in with them YET!.

We own carrilo rods, and Weisco is making rods now also, only aluminum though.

get us rods too

what about cams, and a new block based off the bowtie stuff, but lots cheaper??

why not just buy a bunch of the wiseco 20cc dished pistons they currently sell, they would be cheaper than having a custom forging or custom pistons made and they are already on the shelf. If anyone wants them I can sell them some around $300 a set?

that is the thing, I dont' think they will have to make a custom forging.

I have already sent a message to see what kind of deal I can get for the group.

I will updated everybody when I get back from WA on the 3rd.

Ill probably be in and my roomate may very well be interested too. Let me know and I wont spend money on stupid shit right now and just save for these once in a lifetime pistons:) I dont know how much the JE pistons cost right now (help?) But I would definatly be interested in a set even though I dont plan on building an engine for some time.

with teh overwhelming variety of sbc pistons out there, i wonder at the need...but i'd be real interested in a set myself! - i'll want +.030.
more important, what's the scoop on these rings?
btw, PLEASE don't use thin or metric ring packages on these new slugs...i would happily any day trade the slight frictional increases for the durability under boost.

The rings I make, are HIGH dollar rings, not designed or made with auto in mind. For example a typical ring we sell is ~$30 EACH

so multiply that by 12 (2 sealing rings per piston) doesn't include the oil scraper rings.

$360 for rings for a syty, and that is a LOW end stuff.

We have some rings right now, that cost $13,000 EACH..

Only reason I would do it, is if the price is good.
