Bowtie block

Re: Bowtie block

It was definately ran with a two piece rear main seal crank, since it has half of the adaper to run the two piece... And I agree, 99.9 % chance it was an odd fire crank.

So what you're sayin is, I have the start to an interesting coffee table... LOL And I literally despise those shin bashing pos's.... LOL

i would go as far as that, if it has a bore that can be cleaned up and magnaflux's out ok then you could just sale it.

id check the bore, have it magged, check the deck height, then sale it

if it was an internal oil pump block id say you could do a mild budget build to make a reliable 500-600hp
with a set of nice iron heads (vortec, L-35's)

Re: Bowtie block

Looks to me like there should be a second half to this rear seal piece? Would this have to be a machined matched set?

It was definitely a 2 pc seal an I'm missing the lower half of the seal adapter. I would think the seal adapter set would be a matched pair? (Like main caps, or rod caps). Or since it just holds the seal would any lower adapter piece be compatible with my upper?

The upper half od the seal adapter looks just like the later model OPS seal adapters. Would it accept a later model adapter and be used with a ops crank?

Re: Bowtie block

you can get an adapter on ebay, for either single or two piece, just get one for a sbc

i doubt you'll find just the top, but they're not to bad to buy about 80-100 if i remember right

LOL, Yea, I doubt it'll get made into a coffee table, but being iron, at least the ol lady wouldn't be moving it around all the time... LOL :rotf:

It's in the process of being cleaned and magged now. Checking the bores and decks, crank journal alignment. But I don't think they have sonic checking capabilities. At what size bore would sonic checking be a necessity?

500-600hp is getting into fairly healthy V8 territory for me. LOL But I've never built a big HP anything yet. All my stuff has to be kept pretty mild because I want to drive 'em all everyday. lol

So one from a stock small block will work? I have a few of those. (OPS)

turbos help make those power levels easier to get:)

like in my pm if the bore is around 4.125 and it mags out ok i wouldn't worry about it, in less you have a buyer that insists that it be done before they buy.

You've got a 1 piece rear main seal block using an adapter to use a 2 piece rear main seal crank. Same as this dude has.

Is there seriously this many people on the forum who don't know their SBC rear main seals just by looking at them?

Yea, I understand what you're saying. Which brings up another question, did they make a bowtie block that had a dedicated 2 pc seal? (Machined in the block and rear main cap like the old sb)

Either way, apparently this one swings both ways. LOL

Re: Bowtie block

Stopped at the machine shop a little while ago to measure the bore, but he had in in the hot tank.

Yes. My Bowtie is 2 piece RMS Block and a 2 piece RMS crank so no adapter at all.

The stock production blocks (with upgraded internals) will hold about 700hp, usually owners who build up Bow Tie blocks are planning on making more than 700+ hp.

Re: Bowtie block

Quick check of the bore was 4.120.
He'll measure 'em more accurately if is passes the mag test. Should have all the specs early next week.

Re: Bowtie block

Just got it back from the machine shop. No cracks, 4.120 bore so lots of room there, main bearing journals check straight.

He said the cam bearing journals are .010 oversize, (1st oversize), and he thought it'd be good to replace the main studs just because we don't know how old they are. (Then the main journals would need to be rechecked at least). It has ARP studs/bolts in it. Do the bowties come with those?

It also has oil restrictors in the cam bearing passages.

So far so good!

Re: Bowtie block

Sounds pretty good but I would still get it sonic checked to make due there is no major core shift. Cheap insurance!

I would also get the lifter bores checked. This was a problem on TYTILIDIE's block...

Re: Bowtie block

I hope you know what your getting involved in..There are all kinds of extra cost associated with a Bowtie build.
I just started pricing oil pans for mine as the stock SyTy ones don't fit. Ive been quoted anywhere from $500 to $1000 just for the pan.
I'm not saying you don't have the money to do a build like this, just want to give you a heads up that it will not be cheap.:2cents:

You're not kidding, this thing is nickel and diming me to death. Why doesn't the stock pan fit? Mine does?
