cage

called chassis enginering today and they are going to install a 6 point chromoly cage in the sy for 750.00 , that includes everything. They said it will add 65lbs in chromoly. And i think i will get a lexan window , not sure about that yet, i still like peters idea and making the back bars going to the bed removable like swingouts by the door. I will cover the inside bars with black cloth like the seats have, maybe even have some red stiching in there somewhere. Its nice that chassis enginering is only 20minutes away from the house :D

to start, if you make the back bars removeable you "technically" will not be allowed to run 11s. It must be welded to the frame (solid). I belive the angle must be atleast 30deg on the down bars, so that means it will have to go through the rear window.. i.e lexan.

Some tracks will let you run fast with just a hoop and door bars(like hoover), but according to NHRA rules your truck must have bars going through the back window.

This is exactly why I built a typhoon. I personally couldnt drive a truck on the street with a plastic back window, and bars sticking out everywhere. If I were you, I would talk to the guys over at morosso and come up with a deal so you dont have to cut up the truck. They should let you go up to 130mph or something.

mike, you are right but if we did it where there was a sleeve with pins or something where you could not even tell. i would do the removable after i got teched in at moroso, you can get teched and have a pass for 90days. But you are right i dont want to cut up the truck so i will give them a call today and see what they say, it seems like they can be such hardasses. I think a chromoly 4 point would be awesome and safer than nothing at all. P.S. i need to call you about that bb turbo, 76

Cage Idea

An idea I had for a 6 point cage with removable rear bars is to make the two going to the bed removable like you mentioned. I have the Breezer removable rear window so you could just take out the rear glass when you need to have the bars in, and put the glass back after you take out the bars. You can see it at the FAST meet in Orlando memorial Day weekend.

Since Jack's gonna try my idea, lemme expand on it a bit as I think part of what I explained to him isn't represented here:

My cage idea first and foremost like Mike said is technically NOT legal, but I think it would pass all but the most HARDENED Tech's.

What I was thinkin fer my Sy is a regular hoop w/removable/lexan window like Gary S said, BUT where the bars attach at the top of the hoop to go out to the bed, make'em removable w/a setup similar to swing outs. Then have the same removable setup at the other end in the bed above the bed floor so that when your at the track, you can have the cage in, and when your on street earnin your pay, you can remove it for weight and street creedo. Basically, the BEST of both worlds.

As for seein the joints, I'd have them placed REALLY high in the cab, next to the roof, and in the bed you wouldn't see'em b/c I'd have a bed cover over the cage.

I've never tried this, but it sounds like it'd work.

Good luck Jack, let us know how it goes. And I hate ya ya bastard for livin so close to CE!!!! :p

When you gettin Al IM too so we can chat????

Jack, I gotta say too that I'd be careful goin 76BB on your Sy. I'd get yer Sy tuned 1st to 25 psi so there's very little correction, work on your launches, 60ft's, work the timing, AFR, and THEN, maybe step up.

BG schooled me and he's right, don't step up till you need too. Nobody I know has run a 76BB on our setup yet and you may end up having to make ALOT of changes to get it to work. Your stall may go up, may have bad spool, could be laggy, or could just be too much fer your bottom end. Nobodies pushed this hard so your entering uncharted territory. I'd run what ya go and when your ready to go 76BB, get a girdle and turbo from Mike, then try it. Just my opinion.

You tried launchin it yet too w/7-10 #'s boost on the ET streets? How'd it work out? Lemme know, I'm interested.

Oh yeah, your Sy WILL go 10.80's the way it sits, esp. w/all weight loss your doin. Now go get that 10 and leave it alone!!!!!!

Peter, you go fast by trying new things. :) Since he is going BB the spool will be the same if not much better and top end will be great. Just need to make sure the tune is there and gradually lean it out. FYI, I have 2 customers running bigger turbos then a 76 on stock block/crank. One has run 30psi, and it lived. both dual ball bearing and spool is better then 72 P.

As for cage, I just wanted to make sure you talked with Morosso first. They might say ok, maybe not. I would just hate for you to spend all this money and then have them say "nope!". Morosso is used to be really easy on tech.. not sure about these days.

Hey Mike,

if your customers are runnin bigger then 76's w/same bottom end as me and Jack, then I say go for it. I just didn't know anybody who has done it. Could you educate me and the rest of the UBB as to what size turbo your customers are runnin, what AR, what inducer/exducer wheels, 3 or 4 bolt, BB or not, etc. If can tell us too, what is the rest of their combo, what they've run, what hesds/int, cam, etc. Any info would be appreciated.

As forJack's Sy too, its his call but last time I tuned his truck at Moroso, it had a TON more in it. He still needed tune Ve for boost he was runnin and had at least 3-5 more #'s to go. Just tryin to help out, def not tryin deny you biz.

TTYL Mike and Jack

TIA  :p :D  8)

you know i love you guys(well you know what i mean) I would not be where i am today with the truck if you guys did not help me out, especially you peter. Now, i wish i would have bought a bb in the first place, so why not get a 76 instead of a bb72. I mean i want the bb regardless , be it72 or 76, so am i crazy or what? If i do the cage with the removables , that was your idea so if you need royalties :D I would prefer to do just a 4 point and be done, but i do like racing and to go to the track for 1 pass is no fun, so i will call the tech guys tommorow and see what they say. Peter, when i went sat. i only got one pass and the caltracs with the flexaforms work great , i only left at 5lbs and the truck went straight, i hope it will go straight at 10lbs , we will see. When you running again? It will be cool to see you guys at the nats , cant wait

double post WTF? Oh yeah peter, i bought a gtech, so that road i took you for a ride and we turned around and tryied to launch at 10lbs and spun a little , well i will record some runs there and maybe we can work on the ve tables, you still want my stock stuff we talked about? Oh yeah i bought a msd10 with dual coils, works awesome , probably should buy a few spare cap and rotors as it puts out something like 300mjs to the plugs

Be more than happy to help w/your FAST system, just send me the logs. I'd say DEFINITELY consult w/Mike on the turbo as I guess he knows how much a stock bottom can take  I sure don't yet. Hell, I'm hopin you two can school me!!!

TTYL and lemme know if i can help in any way

80R trim dual BB, .81 T4 tang w/ 3.5" downpipe.

A 76 would be a great choice, especially the dual ball bearing stuff. It spools soo much better then a regular rotating group. Since jack is running a good suspension/tire combo it should hook and thus benefit from instant boost.

You can argue the fact whether you want to dial in the truck now, or put on the turbo and finish the boost programing. Most likely the boost area of the map will need to be looked at from 2-25psi.

Just to let you guys now i talked to al Dunston awhile ago at teh Great Lakes Gathering about cages. Now my memory is a little fuzzy but I am pretty sure he said he could do a cage for a typhoon for around $500. Al if you read this can you explain? Thanks

Robert, is that cage all you need to run at the track or you simply installing something for safety, no disrespect but that would not pass my tracks in florida.Looks nice though :D
