Extreme Trans Trouble...

Ok so earlier this year I had a problem with the truck's shifting points. It would shift out of gears VERY late. To correct this, I pressed on the D shaped buttton under the hood and pulled the tv cable all the way to the drivers side. I then got in the truck and pressed the gas pedal very slowly to WOT, and then the truck would shift fine. The pedal would feel nice n tight. I would have to repeat this every few weeks or months. Now today it happened again, and no mattter what I do the truck wont shift unless it gets up to almost redline... I immediately parked it in the driveway and left it there... I did the tv cable adjustment trick about 7 times to no avail, I also tried to manually move it a little bit left or right to see If I could manually adjust it to get it working... to no avail... This morning it was all fine... all the gears worked and it shifted into OD. Maybe not at the exact points where it should, but the truck was perfectly driveable...

Now I'm kinda screwed, no matter what I do the cable just won't "adjust" I'm thinking that there might be a problem on the other end of it? Or maybe it broke internally or something?

I'm pretty sure that If I put a new TV cable assembly into the truck it will fix all the transmission problems that I've been having. So my question is... Where do I get a new TV cable as well as all the hardware I'll need to install it (retainer clips, extra parts, etc.) I know that George Blake is no longer in business, so I have no Idea where to turn to...

Also, could there be something else wrong that would make the truck just not want to shift besides the tv cable? and what stuff should I try out before I just take it to a trans shop and get myself into thousands of dollars in debt to fix something that could probably be fixed for so much less....or to just buy a whole new transmission and everything asociated with it even though it most likely isn't necessary... I really dont want to have to do that =\

I just got a new job after months and months of being unemployed just 3 days ago, and really don't have too much money or I'd take it to a trans shop... I really, really need this truck on the road, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

The truck shifts, but very very late, like I have to poud on the gas pedal for it to shift, adn thats for every gear... which I normally do the adjustment trick to fix, and it works fine. This time the adjustment trick isnt working...the truck still shifts late, and the gas pedal feels like it has almost no resisance... i can push it with my finger.... normally when I do the adjustment trick, the gas pedal tightens up... now it doesnt do that... depending on the adjustment I do, depends on how hard I gotta beat down the gas pedal to get it to shift... but most of the time its around 5000 rpm... the truck shifts, and the turbo flutters...theres no way im driving this truck anywhere....I was going 30 miles per hour to get home at 3000-3500 rpm! I first noticed the trouble on the highway, I was going 80mph and put the pedal 1/2 way down to pass someone, and it downshifted putting me from like 3000 rpm to almost 4000rpm....

as for the trans failing.. I have a feeling that daily driving the trans while its been shifing out of 1st gear a tiny bit late (too hard) must have done some damage, but I doubt its anything to do with this, being that I was having this problem in every gear... even OD on the highway.... I was driving home on the highway at 3000rpm and building 5lbs of boost to only go 65 when i was limping it home....I'll make a video of all my findings right now so you guys can see the problem better... hang on...

ok here it is...

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

Something in the rear of the vehicle... its not the window, since I still get the squeak if its open... So its either the tailgate, spare tire, rear seat, etc... idk....something in the general area of the cargo part of the truck

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

the plastic teeth on the tv cable are probably worn.. they were starting to wear last time i helped fix it..

he is in NJ, 8min from me.

just watched the video.. that squeak is horrible.

if it wasn't so cold out i'd offer to help..

:rotf: at the POV camera. keys in, driving, popping the hood, grabbing the screwdriver.

I would definitely check the pan. Maybe all the adjusting F'd up the TV cable and now it won't function properly.

Ok, so you think a new tv cable will do the trick? I gotta get this fixed by tuesday night =\

lol yea, I figured I'd be as detailed as possible...and yea I always make sure I keep my snap-on ratchet/screwdriver in the truck...

now you guys know what it looks like to drive a real-life broken typhoon! :p

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

So if the problem does in fact seem to be the tv cable...where can I get one? As well as instructions on how to change it...who has the best price on one? I'm kinda short on cash =\

Also i noticed there's a heavy duty version as well as a stock version...what's the difference? As well as their prices and availability? I gotta get this truck fixed so I can go to work wednesday morning

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

According to what i read, you adjust tv cable by opening the butter flys by hand not by your foot.
If tv cable teeth are worn, then after to adjust it by hand to fully open, put a clamp on it so it wont move.

Good luck..

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

Actually I think that your Throttle Valve(TV) is stuck fully applied. Therefore the trans thinks that you are at 100% throttle all the time. This is causing high line pressure(hard shifts) and the pressure from the governor is not able to overcome it to command a gear shift.

I bet that if you manually pull your TV cable you will find little to no resistance. It should have pretty steady resistance and pull out 1.5 - 2".

I'd drop the pan and inspect the TV.

Good luck..

More info for you:

Your tranny determines how & when to shift by comparing two things. TV pressure and pressure from the governor. TV pressure increases with throttle position and governor pressure increases with speed. When governor pressure overcomes TV pressure it commands a upshift. Your problem is that your TV pressure is maxed. In order to overcome that you need a lot of governor pressure(speed).

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

so... anyone have a syty specific cable for a good price? or should I just get that universal repair kit? also, could there be something wrong on the other end? rather than on the end with the plastic teeth? and does the universal repair kit have new teeth? Or just a new wire? I'm kinda lost here... and my repair time window is closing rapidly, I've been doing research on TV cable repair, and checked all the local part stores for a repair kit or replacement, and everything's turning up empty...

call up some local trans shops, they should have the parts you need or know where to get them locally.

I probably have an extra cable, i did purchase one of George's before he quit selling stuff, but I don't really want to sell it as i'm planning on using it on my sy. I'd have to search high and low to find the stock TV cable from my sy.

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

There is a good chance its not your cable.. Did you read what I posted? Its most likely a problem with the TV assembly inside the tranny This can be accessed/serviced by dropping the pan.

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

thx matt, I'll check it out... being that the cable doesnt seem to look frayed broken or anything... and I can say that the throttle cable has little to no resistance on it, like you mentioned...i can easily pull it...plus i can presss the gass pedal to WOT using my pinky finger....

DITTO! The TV cable has little plastic teeth on it. It won't stand up to *repeated* adjusting for long before the teeth start to strip off then you WILL need a new cable.

Re: Extreme Trans Trouble...

Their is a spring in the TV valve that is slightly tappered, if been put in backward it will jamn the valve in into the valve body. (Its the line up that basically is connected to your TV Cable) It just need to be turned around reassembled. This is would only happen some was in the valve body cleaning it out, or making changes..
