Need tuning help for simple system.......

If anyone of you know me i have nothing but BS stuff going on with this SY of mine.
The mods include.
L35s
AFPR
Manual boost controller(set on lowest setting)
3 Bar MAP
1.6 RR
exhaust with no cat
custom chip from Noslow50. Chip is made for 18-20 PSI boost and 45 psi fuel pressure(at idle), EGR delete, 3 bar map and fuel tables set for L35s.

So my problem is i have a detnation problem when boost pressure is over 8 PSI. Can hear the truck buck and pop through the exhaust.

Now Fuel pressure during the concern is 55-60 PSI
boost is 7-8 PSI
Base timing is set at ZERO(with brown wire disconnected under dash, engine at idle)
At idle timing sits about 3 degrees
Fuel is new 93 oct.

anyone have any ideas?

Re: Need tuning help for simple system.......

has this chip worked before? What has changed? Is that fuel pressure when it is knocking or is it at idle with the vac line off? Are the vac lines right?

If your base is 45 and you are at 7-8 lbs. boost, you should be at 52-53 psi. based on the 1:1 increase. Not sure if that is your problem, but too much fuel can detonate as well. Plugs/gap? Just thinking out loud...Jim

Vac lines are correct, Chip has been used in another truck. Im thinking maybe something to do with fuel. only thing i would have changed was the fuel pressure regulator. Going to swap over to stock again and see what happens?

Re: Need tuning help for simple system.......

When did you measure the fuel pressure? So what I gather is that this chip has not worked in your truck? Do you have the right map sensor? If you have swapped a chip from another truck then you have to match everything to the other truck. Do you have Datamaster or tunerpro that you can take a log with?

Chip has been in two differnt trucks with out a problem. Also chip has been ran in my truck for about a year now... But i was only running 10 PSI Max boost and running the factory fuel pressure regulator. Since the motor is now broken in i added the AFPR and manual boost controler and now i have problems.

I do not have anything for deat besides a TECH ONE GM scan tool. Im guessing my scan tool will give the same info that a Dadamaster would?

What should i be looking at.

Re: Need tuning help for simple system.......

I haven't seen a scan tool that will do data logging. What are your AFR's when it starts to break up? What did you adjust the regulator to when you put it in? When you adjusted it, was the vac line off?

My scanner will not data long. so i dont hvae a reading when it breaks up. I set the fuel pressure regulator with the vacuum line on the regulator. Should i have adjusted it with the vacuum line off?

Yes, when you adjust the regulator the vacuum line should be disconnected.

Re: Need tuning help for simple system.......

You're not going to be able to "tune" much without datalogging capability and no wide band.

$60 gets you an ALDL cable. You can download the software for free.
Wide-band will run around $200, but when you have it, you learn lots about what's really happening with fuel.

Or find buddies with all of the above, and bring beer.

Re: Need tuning help for simple system.......

I give up..... F this truck. As soon as its running good its going for sale.... going to waste my money on something i actually want.......
The factory fuel pressure reg is back on it. Messed with fuel pressures. No change. only thing i can think of is timing problem but dont know how that could be. All i did was change the intake gaskets.
Truck runs perfect with out any boost.

I need help. Im running proven parts and chip.

Re: Need tuning help for simple system.......

What should the fuel pressure be set at with the FPR unpluged
If the chip calls for 45 psi then you should set the FP at idle with the vac line off and plugged. Sounds like you have too much fuel, what are the plugs gapped at as well?

Re: Need tuning help for simple system.......

Find the grey clip port plug to the left of the distributor and put 12 v to it and adjust your fuel pressure without the truck running. Set it to 45 to start and adjust a little at a time if you need to.

I am guessing you idle timing isn't 3 degrees, it will most likely be in the 25-30 range (it depends on the tune) Most people don't specify fuel pressure at idle with the vacuum source connected, it usually a base fuel pressure specified. 45psi at idle is about 54-56psi base fuel pressure, depending on how much vacuum you have at idle. If you have it set that high, you might be running out fuel pump capacity especially if you have the original fuel pump.

I have never heard of Noslow50, does he own a SyTy? I am skeptical of anyone who says they have a tune for certain mods such as L35 heads , unless the tuner has a truck with the same build (ie L35's, 1.6RR) and he tuned it himself. I have seen chip labeled as L35 heads, only to read the bin and realize that its just stock head Ultimate chip program. Also, just because it work on 2 other trucks doesn't mean its going to work on yours.

At the very least you need a scan tool that you can drive around and record data with. (the data has to be able to read back frame by frame). I have no idea if the Tech One will do that. Without a scan tool, your going to be guessing.

Well i have narrowed it down to timing.... put the stock FPR back on same problem. I adjusted the AFPR down and then truck would buck and pop out the exhaust(off idle)...
