Running lean all the time

Re: Running lean all the time

Look at your lower intake - does it look like the sides have been welded at all? Can you get a valve cover off to read the number on the heads by any chance?

With a 2 bar map in place, the stock gauge boost gauge will read "0" with the key on and no start. With a 3 bar map installed, it'll be 1/3 the way up the gauge, not half (2 bar map, ~2.5V is 0bar, 3 bar map 1.7V is 0bar, both sensors put out 5V at max pressure)

Does that make sense?

Re: Running lean all the time

I went out and checked, key on, engine not running, my stock boost gauge needle goes up past half way. It goes to the next mark or space in the gauge. So it goes 2/3rds of the way up

Re: Running lean all the time

I wonder if the motor has higher than stock compression pistons.

I was wondering that too but wouldn't that mean less air in the cylinder so actually a richer tune and lower AFRs?

The new head bolts makes me wonder if someone replaced the engine with a vortec motor or vortec heads. More airflow, attempted to put a JET chip in to compensate rather than tuning it properly.

Have a look at the timing cover as well. If there's a cam sensor on the bottom, it's potentially a vortec motor.

Of course, I have an overactive imagination so am probably way off. No fuel in the vac lines I take it? (Bad FPR)

Re: Running lean all the time

I checked my MAP and it is a 2 bar. It didn't look like anything had been welded on the intake manifold either, but I need to re check it as I didn't have much time yesterday. I also am wondering if the turbo is bigger since the stock waste gate controller doesn't bolt to it. It is a newer turbo for sure. There is no fuel in the vac lines. I actually replaced the regulator when I got the truck for that problem. I just used a stock FPR though. I have an adjustable FPR on the way.

Re: Running lean all the time

Sorry for the delay, busy at work and crappy weather makes for no driving the truck. Monday I pulled the truck in, re-checked base timing, twice, double checked that my intake manifold had not been modified, and it hasn't. Just as luck would have it, my adjustable FPR showed up and I put that on as well. I set the base pressure high, just so I could see if this actually made a difference. I forgot my computer at home so I didn't have Data Master with me. I had some running to do after work, and the truck seemed to run great. Under boost air fuels were much richer and I couldn't hear any knock or pinging. As soon as the rain/snow crap stops I'll set base fuel pressure at 43 and run some logs to see where I am actually standing. I'll update when I know more.

Re: Running lean all the time

Update: So, I was pretty pumped about the last time I drove the truck. It's been in the garage because of the rain and crappy weather the last week but today was nice so I took it out. I did some test pulls, half throttle, and it was great. So I really got into it and the same issue happened. Pinging and lean condition. I decided I needed to really check out the turbo situation since I had no idea what turbo was on it. I moved some things around and was able to find some numbers on the turbo. I decided to google Typhoon 20g images. First one that pops up shows the same numbers I have. Long story short, I have a stock chip, stock injectors, 3" cat back with test pipe, and a 20g. No wonder it runs lean. Now I need to find someone to burn me a chip for what I've got until I decide which way I am going to go with this whole thing. I'd like to just put on a front mount and a stand alone ECU and big injectors and have a good time honestly.

For what you have....Standalone is a ton of cash for not a ton of performance IMO.

My suggestion would be to get the gear for Code59, and start learning. You should be able to tune in your current combo to run great with those hard parts and some patience. it can handle big injectors as well should you go that route.
