idle missfire??

Re: idle missfire??

I hate putting the distributor back in. I had to do it on my 76' vette and i ended up wayyyyy off and brought it into a shop to get done. Hah. Great, cause my TY is like 3 teeth off as it is now so I'm going to have to do it anyways. Might as well change the switch while re-setting the distributor. I find it hard to know when you're on TDC. I pulled the #1 plug and stuck my finger there to feel the air get pushed out, but it was so faint it was hard to tell. Any other ways to figure out if you're on TDC that's easier/ more distinguishable?

Re: idle missfire??

I think you remove all plugs and put the stop in pistion 1 then rotate the engine one way till it stops and put a mark. then rotate the engine the otherway till it stops and put another mark. Between the 2 marks should be TDC. Correct?

Re: idle missfire??

Correct. Bit only number 1 needs to come out. Unless you want to check and re-gap all your plugs.

Re: idle missfire??

I thought The engine would turn over easier with all the plugs out. I have yet to do it. Or maybe its because I have had my truck for 6 months and had my plugs out 5 times already. LOL

Re: idle missfire??

I have a new distributor, module, chip, wires, msd cap, rotor, & MSD coil, new AC delco 42tc plugs, and mine does it, and does it often, like every ten seconds. It also hesitates just after pushing gas pedal on a slow take off, but it runs like a bat out you know where, and at any cruise speed, or mash of the gas, it never responds badly. I figure, it it ain't broke, and ain't going to fix it till it is, like our government would.

Same with mine. I'm assuming it's that switch now. Mine has a slight hesitation when I first ease on the gas also.

Re: idle missfire??

Took of the switch. Wow what a pain in the a$$. Took about 45 min. I removed the coil (have a new stock style MSD), Dist, rotor and a few lines. It was larger then the new one and I had to use a box wrench. The post it is connected to moves??? it is loose and the sensor can swing back and forth. Its tight but moves. is that normal. Also what is the sensor under it with just a blue or green wire attached?? is that the Knock sensor?? its rusty in my dist. can it be cleaned??? THANKS GUYS

BTW Mine was the 3/8 sensor

Re: idle missfire??

With The New Switch The Oil Pressure Stays Pegged. Looks Like A Bad Switch. God, Now I Have To Do That All Over Again.

Re: idle missfire??

Not pos with our trucks but a pegged gauge usually means a grounded sensor wire. Check to make sure you don't have short at the sensor before you actually change it again.

Re: idle missfire??

Thanks Don. It was the sensor. I put in a new one and tada!! it shows a solid 45-50 psi. Usualy the thing bounces at 60-80 but it was holding steady at a lower pressure. The mount the sensor attaches to is lose. Is that normal or do I have a problem??? The sensor can swing in the round post. How does it attach to the engine. The truck idles better then ever. I will have to see how it runs tomorow. Today is my B-day and I have a game to go to. Go Sharks!

THANKS ALL. I WILL POST AN UPDATE MONDAY

HAPY B-DAY!!!

If I follow what you're saying you'll eventually have a leak there if you don't already. Based on what little I can see of mine without pullin' the dis and looking at the drawing in the manual it would appear that there is a short riser out of the block then some sort of an adapter for the oil pres sw itself. I've never changed one but I'll bet that you need those fittings tight or you'll have a leak.

glad you got it figured out, not many people consider the OP switch, but it is a vital sensor for the truck to run properly. happy B-day, i hope the sharks win as well

Re: idle missfire??

Thanks Don. I cant see where or how to tighten the riser pipe? I have a bunch of small leaks all over my engine. It was loose before and probably one of the leaks I have. It is more lose then before but I cant see down there enough to tighten it. My truck does not drip oil bt it does have small leaks. I am planning on rebuilding in a few years so as long as it runs good I can care less about the leaks.

BTW: I found a broken heat shield around plugs 3-5. Could that cause false KR. ?

I would have to say yes.. I've heard of heat shield on stock dp, brake lines and fuel lines tapping the frame causing false knock
