Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's

I used the stock battery tray. I moved it down about 4" or so and cut the front mounting tabs off, made it shorter and re-bolted it to the core support.(just lower from where it was factory)

Then when Installing the wheel well, I cut that and welded it to the battery tray. It's all still removeable with bolts. I don't think it'll hit over big bumps. I don't have big tires on it so that might be helping :)
I've seen the ATR re-locate kit they usto make. Mine's not that low but I didn't need alot.

I didn't take alot of time on this project since it's just a winter truck. I'll spend the time to make the IC pipes look nice later. I just want it tuned and safe for her for the winter. :)
If I would have stayed on it steady from start to finish it'd taken about 3days with all the supplies here and not chasing my tail for little odds/ends.
Once I get it tuned I'd be glad to send anyone that tune file if they'd like to do somthing similar.

thats pretty cool, how does the hat stay on the intake? how does it feel, much faster part throttle just a little?

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's

I used the same Epoxy that I include with the "Typhoon" Engine plate. It's a A-B epoxy that bonds metal together. I let it dry over night and it's on there for good. The throttle bodys on these CPI engine's are almost 4"!
I cut a peice of 4" and squeezed it down and welded it. Smoothed it on the inside so it had to be Tapped on with a hammer slightly (tight fit) ruffed up that area on the TB. and then epoxy'd it in place.
I'm going to make two more steel supports on front/back that can be un-bolted from the throttle body. I trust the epoxy but I'd rather be safe than sorry later. A little added support never hurts.

Yes.. from a part throttle stand point it's just like the Typhoon. Picks up quickly and is into boost very easy (stock Typhoon turbo remember those ;)
The newer ECM seems to keep the AFR right at 14.7-15.2 I'm still running the stock double O2 sensors (one per bank) Although the one for the pass. side is actually in the downpipe so it's reading both banks instead of just the pass. side.
I put the Drivers side O2 in the crossover pipe.
These ECM's can rich/lean bank to bank which is nice because by looking at the intake design on the inside I think #5 is going to be rich since it's way in the back and the furthest from the TB.
I'll be reading the plugs when I start driving it on a daily basis tomorrow.
Ok.. going to finish the bumper and work on other people's stuff!

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's(Turbo Project)

Last picture with the bumper repaired and painted. I put the power 6 plate back on since It looks good on there.

I've got about 40miles on it. So far so good. I definatly need to tune the fuel richer more than 3/4 throttle and back the timing down. I put some 93oct. in it for now.

I checked the 4wd system since I re-located the actuator.. it works ;)

Now I guess I'll need to stock up on some more tires LOL!

I should receive the tuning sofware from HP Tuners on Monday or Tuesday. Add this to the long list of tuning stuff I've worked with.

Hope this thread helps someone turbo their newer Jimmy/Blazer with recycled Typhoon parts

nice work, i would love to know what type of numbers it puts down once you tune it.

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's(Turbo Project)

I think I located the Marine intake for the 4.3L I can put a adjusable FPR on it and it has external fuel rails and uses regular injectors.
From the looks of the manifold I think the air distribution would be excellent!

If it works out It might be a awsome option for guys that don't mind changing the Factory SY/Ty plenum for a newer Vortech style. No mod's to the heads using this intake (with vortech heads)

Here's a pic of the intake breakdown. I'll let you know how much it is and where to get it once I get one.

I also have to get the Transmission rebuilt. The 3/4 gear went out after 200mi. It has 140,000mi on the stock transmission. I knew I was on borrowed time especialy after putting alot more power to it after all those miles. I'll be upgrading it to 4L60E spec's. Which should hold about 500ft/lbs torque. No stall converter.
Thought I'd give you a update... I also have HP tuners once I get all the Trans built!

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's(Turbo Project)

I kept the stock sending unit and pump assembly from when it went out on us around 80,000mi.

I ordered a 225lr/hr fuel pump for a 87 Buick GN. This morning I took apart the stock sending unit

and pump. If you carefully take the stock stuff apart the Warbro pump is a direct fit. I enlarged the

fitting at the top of the sending unit as the hole was very small. I used 5/16 Fuel Inj hose to attatch

the pump to the top of the factory sending unit. The connector that came with the Buick style pump

was a direct plug in! I should have the volume I need to fuel it. Hopefully the Intake will work for

me and the trans should be back in and working in a week or so.

Thought I'd let you know that it's possible to put a good pump in the factory sending unit!

So what did you do with the little black line that comes off the top of the pump:

Fuel%20pump%20assembly%20disassembled%202.jpg

Did you just eliminate it? If so do you know what it does? I don't.. I have a theory that it fills the cup that the fuel pump sits in to prevent slosh when fuel levels get low..

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's(Turbo Project)

That's a excellent picture of the sending unit! I clipped the line down low and took out that weird bobber thing. It's just the pump with 5/16 line. At the very bottom of the sending unit where it's got that rubber flap I drilled that out so it'd fill the inside quickly.

I'm not 100% sure what exactly that bobber and black line does. Darn good question :)

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's(Turbo Project)

Got the transmission back in Saturday. I watched and helped the guy tear down the trans. All we found wrong with the darn thing was a small brass"exhaust" port bushing that was pressed into the huge part that has the input shaft on it blew out. All the clutches and seals and bands were good.

I did the TCI "Best" kit for the rebuild. It contained the corvette servo's and kevlar clutches/extra one's for one of the gears. Shift re-programing and some other tricks that were in the kit.

1-2 shift is Very firm. 2-3'd is crisp and 3-4 is about the same/normal. Lock up waits a few more mph than what it did before.

Two more things left to do to the truck... Find the Marine intake and install that.... Tune to the bigger injectors and that's it!
It's totaly drivable now... and is being drivin daily. I've got Ok fuel up top at this point but I'm running out of injector...... so we can't go beating on it till I get the intake/injectors I need to fuel it.
I also installed a 255/LR/hr fuel pump while I had everything apart.

at this point would it be easier just to mod syty lower intake and put a upper on?

I replaced the injector setup in a 1500 series with a 4.3 at the begining of the summer. I got it from the dealer and it was setup just like you said. Instead of having the injectors in the middle and poppet valves it had lines that go to a small injector with wires right at the port. I doubt they are any bigger than the stock poppet valves but I'm sure that they are alot better at not failing and spray pattern.
I plan on getting a little test time/drive time and changing the injectors before I tune. I think the injector and the adaptor bracket with gaskets was 180.00 area. The new connector/injector sit's different than the stock one and requires a adaptor bracket.
I still think the Marine intake manifold would be the best choice. That'll have to be another day's project. :)
Thanks for the suggestions and input... I'm down to the last intercooler pipe to the throttle body.
Almost there~!

Got the part # handy? Did it look like this, only with 6 instead of 8?

Thats what I'm looking for!

It's the same as the e-bay acution you had there... He's got one more.. I'm e-mailing him for details.

Thanks for finding that!!!!! I could not find one!

no problem, I've been keeping an eye out for one for my truck but I don't have the $ for more engine work this year. there will be alot of interest from the late model 4.3 guys if it can be made to work fairly easily.

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's(Turbo Project)

I'll have a decent tune to start from with stock Typhoon Injectors that's what I'll be installing for now since I'm not running anything bigger than a stock Typhoon Turbo/dp.
I think that Marine intake is the ticket!!!!
It's got a real nice smooth bottom on the inside of the manifold and small bumps before each port. I'll bet it's got better air distribution than a Sy/Ty plenum.
Anyhow... I hope I can get this one on e-bay and get to testing and tuning. It'll be sweet.
Anyone that can get ahold of another manifold like this and get the same injector I'm going to be running is welcome to start off their truck with my tune... Just let me know and i'll send over the HP Tuners file.

Re: Things you might not know about newer Jimmy's(Turbo Project)

Once you get that Marine intake on what are you going to use for a TB and would it be better once converted to Vortec heads on a Typhoon? I am just trying to wrap my mind around what all would have to be done to make it work.
