Re: idle missfire??

HELP!!! $hit, its not gone. Switch, wires, msd coil and its still missing. I noticed something wet (gas I think) on plug 1. I figured ok bad wire. Replaced the wires and it still misses. Only after its warm. For the first 10 min. its great. When I give it gas it takes off good. I am still getting more KR then I want but I have to fix this first. What else could it be????????????????????? Cap and rotor looked fine but I will put in new ones. I will also pick up a new plug to se if I did not just get a bad one. HELP!!! anyone, this is driving me crazy. A new charger is looking more apealing each day. I love my sy but I want to drive it! I will give it one more month and 500$ and if nothing... E-bay.

One wet plug? Swap that injector and see if it follows. If so, bad inj.

Re: idle missfire??

it was the oil pressure switch. sits right below the dist. I can get a part # if you need it.

Hmmmm again "cuz it needs the richness? And, at least my truck, doesn't run -that- smooth when cold anyway. Plus you 've got the extra RPM....Ask someone who knows what they're talking about.:rotf:

Thanks Don. I will try it tomorw and see. The Dm shows nothing. The truck runs good cold.

Re: idle missfire??

my engine does have leaks. I see oil everywhere but nothing drips. I just wipe it up at each oil change. The misfire started right after I used the xylene. Coult it have messed up my O2?? The dm shows everything is good. I want to track down the misfire before I go crazy! Picked up a rotor and cap. Old ones look good but who knows. Might get a dist. if I can find someone to help me instal??

Guy at my work said its possibe a bad valve could be causing this. I did a compression test but when the engine was cold. Mabe I should do one after The idle problem starts. Under wot it feels good?? Thats what I dont get.

Like I said, I bought it to drive and have fun. If it was going to be a collector car I would have bought one with less miles. I dodnt want to beat it up, just enjoy it. I have had it for 6 months now and got to take it out for 4 weekends while it ran good. To date plus price of the truck I have spent 17-18k and cant drive it. I love my sy but....

Re: idle missfire??

well i would change the o2, only if the misfire happens in closed loop, i believe phils chip disables closed loop. is the misfire way to unbearable for you? when it misfires does it feel like its going to stall out or is it a rough idle like wild cam or something? from all your revious posts it sounds like your truck is running very well. it seems that all our trucks are plauged with a rough idle. i don't mind it that much, it reminds me that my truck is running as opposed to all the BMWs at work that don't even make a sound at idle. to each is own.:2cents:

at least you have a truck that is running:oops:

Re: idle missfire??

Before it had a rough idle. When its cold with the phil chip it idles strong and smoth. when it warms up it is bad, very bad. I had a 600hp 396 that idled better I too love that rough idle.lol. It does have a problem. I pops hard out of the exhaust and sounds like it wants to die. The engine shakes bad. all the plugs look ok. each had a light burn spot on one side and the tips were a bit whiteish. Plug one was darker with what smelted like fuel. I assumed a bad wire. Before I had a slight problem and a rotor and cap fixed it. I only have 1k on the cap. I did look at it thismorning and it has turned green and has burn marks but I have seen worse caps run good on my other cars. I picked up a new cap, rotor and a plug to replace the one bad one. If that dont work I will try the injector switch, then a new dist. After that I guess I will take it in to see what a pro thinks.
Q.S. I will trade you.lol Because it runs as long as you go on a short trip. There was so much I wanted to do to this truck and now I have to use the cash just to make it run.

Re: idle missfire??

i assume you already did an ignition module, right. what were your compression readings? when you hook up a vacuum gauge, is vacuum constant or does it bounce around? did you get it to run lower KR at WOT? what happens on a long trip? jeremy mentioned a while back that he redid the lower intake gasket and his idle smoothed out. im trying my best to help you out.

Re: idle missfire??

module... uh...no. I did a comp test when I first had the missing but it was not that bad. I remember they were in the high 140's to low 160's. I had all the plugs out when I did it. Vaccume is constant at idle. Around 19hg. on 91 I still will get a spike of 5* then it would drop down to 2-3*. Jeremy has been e-mail me to help out.
I did the cap, rotor and replaced the plug on #1 ( it look good this time when I pulled it of) It started good and idled for 10-15 min. I went around with a piece of hose looking for any odd sounds. After 15 min of idle it started to miss again. First it would pop only once a few seconds. Then more and more. Over a 10 min time it would prety much pop 2-3 times a second. The idle will bounce around. I listened again. All Around and in the pcv hose, around each injector,... I heard nothing different this time but the sounds comming out the exhaust. Oil looks good, almost to good. It looks to clean for a 95k engine. but it only had 10 miles on a fresh change.
I have to apologize for this long tread. I know all these posts are driving some guys nuts. I also would like to thank the guys helping me out. You have all been a real help. I have learned so much in the past few months. THANK YOU.

This may sound funny, but recheck your timing again. My truck with 83k idles with 22hg and after puting in a MSD-6A that all to common idle missfire is gone most of the time, unless I run it hard. My compression test came out to be 155 - 160 lb. The lowest cyl was # 4 at 155lb.

Re: idle missfire??

I figure If I get a new dist. it comes with a module. module is 40$ and a whole new dist. from napa is 135$. Would it cause a bad idle when warm. My truck is very specific. When coold I can boost to 18psi and no missfire. As soon as its been running for 10+ min. all hell breaks loose.

Here is something I was thinking today at work. Could it be my plugs. I am running ur6's to help with KR. Could they be too cold and fouling up. All the plugs however look white on the tips with black around the outer part.

nope, as soon as that module gets heat on it, it will crap out. change the module first before a dissy. you will be very happy after. i thought you had done one before.
